The conversation no one wants to have but always wants to “fix”. Being a Black person on top of being a Black planner right now is... I can’t even explain it. Ours, like other professions, have racism in its foundation but ours literally set the stage for every single instance of systemic racism you see today. Black planners are just as dedicated, if not more, to this profession because our communities never got to tell their story or be apart of any growth. Yet, we go through hell and then some to even exist in this profession and be treated like the experts we are.•Don’t ever question why representation matters so much - it’s obvious as hell. And why Black planners matter so much to BLACK communities. Be honest… are you programming to met metrics/perform or are you trying to cultivate a space for folks to gather? Programming public or private spaces should be an EXTRA element; not the primary draw. The problem with the wave of activating spaces currently is programming to fill a calendar and not thinking of long term sustainable elements that people will naturally gravitate to. You can’t program joy, TRUST, relationships, and community. Culture can’t be programmed on a schedule 🙄#placemaking #placekeeping #publicspace #thirdspace #functionoverform by @thedee_p

In 2018 I didn’t see a single Black person in urban planning spaces ANYWHERE. I stumbled on The Black Urbanist not knowing what I’d find but was honestly just happy to see another Black woman talking and sharing perspective about urban planning and urbanism. Never would’ve imagined we’d met in person or that she’d become my mentor and eventually become good friends! She was the light I needed in while I was navigating the early part of my career..Now that her book is out for I couldn’t be more excited and proud of her!! 🥲 Kristen, you deserve all of the success and your flowers in this season! 💐I’m so grateful to have you in my life as so much more than a mentor and for the way you show up for US in this space! 🫶🏾🗣️ GO BUY MY FRIENDS’ BOOK!! by @thedee_p

🗣️ yo! I’ve been sitting on this idea for some time and we’re finally ready to make it happen!❗️for now, here’s the bulk of items we need to bring this to life! It’s not mentioned but of course monetary donations or sponsors or partners are welcomed seriously.🌱 this one is gonna let me tap into a creative side of myself, in/out of urban planning, when it comes to designing spaces.
