This community. 🌿Last week, our CSA members gathered at The Delta for an evening with the farmers and friends behind @amberwavesfarm — and it was exactly the kind of purpose-driven night behind @thedeltabk .Amber Waves Farm is a 50+ acre nonprofit teaching farm in Amagansett, founded 18 years ago by two women — Katie Baldwin and Amanda Merrow — who met as farm apprentices on Long Island and decided to build something bigger than themselves. They’ve since trained 70+ farmers, educated 13,000 children, and donated over a million servings of produce to their community. Is that a baguette in a basket … he asked, judgementally. Yes, and it has a bow. I made this baguette basket at a workshop hosted by Erin and Mollie while eating Jamie’s delicious food at Poppy’s HQ. It was all a dream. An (unpaid) plug to join the basket weaving club, which would be a brilliant graduation gift. New jacket ℅ Part Wild (pockets galore). Below are a few of the many threads woven into this basket.🥖My dear @aschip who helped name Underwater Weaving Studio first introduced me to Erin at @clarysarah launch party for @imnotdead.x , a media company. But I already knew about Erin. It’s hard to miss her in real life and/or on Instagram. She stands taller than the rest, wears a bright lip and oozes cool but is disarmingly open and down-to-earth. What she’s done in one year to build her studio is incredible. 🥖A year ago, Erin joined a pop-up I hosted at The Delta with @house.of.roro @acorntoyshop and @darlingshopnyc . Since meeting, @rosseel.studio (also a crazy creative genius) and Erin have designed and built a furniture capsule – Loves me, Loves me not – nesting flower shaped play tables with inset baskets at their center. I mean … I’m dead. Check out the last slides to see what I mean, right after Jamie wearing her basket as an earring. 🥬This year I met and partnered with the incredible all-female team at @amberwavesfarm and it was through them that I met Mollie, owner of Part Wild, whose workwear line is worn by the staff and farmers (and also at Poppy’s). Mollie and Jamie are college friends, which is why this event was hosted at Poppy’s. Again, women weave, in work and in life. It is what we do and it makes the world a better place. In two hours, I made this basket and connected with local women who I care for deeply and admire beyond belief. They are chefs and restaurant owners, bestselling cookbook authors and founders of media brands with millions of unique views each month. They’ve started sustainable furniture and clothing companies, and so much more. And now we know how to make baskets, too. There is nothing trivial about it. Two weeks ago, in the pre-holiday flurry, there was this quick trip to @stissinghouse to see #craftfeast @deborahneedleman gathering of craft makers and artisans in the cosy, festive and gorgeous setting ℅ @clare.deboer Highlights: * Met the women behind @lindquist.object , the all-natural hand-dyed leather bags made in Rhode Island. I knew about these women because @erinallweiss and @theno29 has worked with them, a sustainably-minded and cool factor bonafide (they also offer paid parental leave to all of their employees even as a small business); and, bc they joined a pop-up at The Delta curated by @m_o_n_d_a_y_s . Let’s bring them back to The Delta this winter - check out this gorgeous bag for inspiration. * Spoke with craft makers and antique dealers whom I greatly admire, including icon Susan of @saipua , whose soap workshop I once took at “the castle” in Red Hook, and Sara’s flower workshop at @foxfodderfarm (met beloved @annamcdonaldnorman ). * Re-introduced myself to @marybreneman and @battle_brown and look forward to them being at the upcoming @namelessartshow art show at the end of January. I highly recommend attending. * Spoke with the lovely @blackash7 , whose baskets sold out within the first hour. * Had an impromptu run-in and excited hug with @jessharris on the stairwell. We had both driven the two hours by ourselves only to return an hour later to our families.* I bought this sachet made from vintage tea towels stuffed with balsam. They were fun and whimsical and I didn’t give it away because I loved it too much. Benjamin LewellynI hope to return next year and encourage all of you to do the same. It was a privilege to attend yesterday’s @toryburchfoundation #embraceambition Summit. The TBF team produced an incredible event that will inform and enhance our mission. @thedeltabk aims to build a more open, enlightened, and empowered family culture that encourages more people to be intentional about health, ambition, and societal good. We want to build a better world for moms. It starts by taking care of self, then one another. 📣There were so many inspiring speakers, from Temple Grandin to @tdufu of @thecru , but one woman turned the auditorium into a community meeting. @dolores_huerta_ 📣In 2017, at @sundanceorg , I saw Dolores, a documentary about the legendary activist Dolores Huerta who co-founded the farm workers union alongside Cesar Chavez. 📣She is most known for her phrase, “si se puede,” or as Obama said “yes we can,” but it was another call that had the most lasting impact and became a mantra.‘Change starts within.’📣It was a thrill, then, to see Dolores Huerta yesterday at Lincoln Center. 📣She told the women in the audience, “do not hold back, don’t be afraid to speak up, nor to take credit.” Cesar Chavez has long been given all the credit for their shared activism. No longer. 📣When asked about her organizing tactics: get people together, say “these are the things that are wrong, these are the things that need to be fixed and guess who needs to fix them? We.”“We are the only ones who can save our democracy.” 📣Then she asked everyone to stand before leading us in a call-and-response of “si se puede.” No wonder, as she has also said: 📣Every moment is an organizing opportunity, every person a potential activist, every minute a chance to change the world.That said, please SAVE THE DATE for September 22nd, 2022. Together with One State at a Time (OSAAT), we’ll gather at The Delta to discuss the ways that WE can get involved in flipping state legislative seats, this time in Michigan. We hope to see you there.
