Are you sure that rash is ringworm?

In many African settings, almost every round or itchy rash is treated as fungal infection. But the truth is, not all of them are.

Several skin conditions can look very similar to Tinea corporis, especially in darker skin where redness is less obvious and patterns can be harder to distinguish.

Here are a few common lookalikes:

• Pityriasis rosea
Often starts with a single “herald patch” before spreading into smaller lesions. It may itch mildly or not at all.

• Granuloma annulare
A smooth, flesh-coloured ring with no scale. Usually not itchy.

• Nummular eczema
Very itchy, coin-shaped patches that may ooze or crust. No central clearing.

So how do you tell the difference?

Many of these conditions can itch, but the *pattern* of the rash is what really matters.

Typical Tinea corporis often has:
• A scaly, raised border
• A ring that expands outward
• Central clearing

Misdiagnosis often leads to unnecessary use of antifungal creams and steroid creams, which may delay proper treatment.

If you’re unsure, it’s always best to see a qualified dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis.

Ignored that stubborn pimple or rash? You are not alone, and your skin remembers.

In many African homes, skin issues are often dismissed as “temporary” or “cosmetic.” But untreated problems can worsen, leaving scars, chronic rashes, or infections. Your skin isn’t just what you see, it is an organ that reacts and warns.
Early care starts with awareness. Ask questions, don’t wait, and understand that managing isn’t the same as treating.

Athlete’s foot is more than just an itchy foot problem.

Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) is a common fungal infection of the feet that thrives in warm, moist environments. It often starts between the toes, where sweat gets trapped, causing itching, burning, peeling, and soft white or cracked skin.

As the infection progresses, it can spread to the soles and sides of the feet, leading to dryness, scaling, blisters, unpleasant odor, and painful skin splits. Without treatment, athlete’s foot can persist for months and even lead to secondary bacterial infections.

The good news?
With early recognition, proper foot hygiene, and antifungal treatment, athlete’s foot is very treatable and preventable.

Healthy feet matter more than you think.

Oily skin still needs moisturizer, even in the dry season.

The key is choosing lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas that hydrate without clogging pores or increasing shine.

What works for someone else may not work for you, especially when skin type and climate differ.

If you are unsure what your skin actually needs, African Derm Hub helps guide you to licensed dermatologists for proper advice and care.

Moisturizer is not just for dry skin, it is a key part of healthy skin care. It helps strengthen the skin barrier, reduce water loss, and protect the skin from irritation and environmental stress. When the skin barrier is weak, skin becomes more sensitive, prone to breakouts, and uneven in tone.

Even oily and acne-prone skin need moisture. Skipping moisturizer can actually worsen oiliness and sensitivity over time. For melanin-rich skin, consistent moisturizing also helps maintain an even tone and overall skin health.
Hydrated skin functions better. Moisturizing is essential, not optional.
