Happy Halloween to all our students, alumni, parents, and friends 🎃 Wishing everyone a safe weekend filled with scary fun!

Every year, students in Introduction to Design & Creative Thinking compete in a Pumpkin Lantern Contest. Designed by Professor Tiffany Lin, the assignment tasks students with carving pumpkins with designs inspired by famous abstract paintings.

Congratulations to this year's winners; Sydney Lasser, Angelique Lartigaut, Victoria Guarderas, and Margareth Tanusaputra!

Visual Communication and Advocacy Mid Review! by @thedesignprogram

How can design shape the way we experience public spaces?

As part of their second project of the semester, students in Design Studio II (DESG 3005) developed innovative proposals for a playground on Tulane’s campus, exploring the relationship between the human body and the built environment.

Through user-centered design, students considered diverse resting postures, and the ways people interact with shared spaces to translate body-scale considerations into a larger urban design proposal. The review, led by the studio's Professor of Practice Hannah Berryhill, brought these ideas together, highlighting how thoughtful design can make public spaces more engaging, comfortable, and inclusive.

Mapping Your Hometown: Tactile Topography Full Scale

Ruby K. maps river reservoirs, forests, fields, and significant urban structures in this heavily layered topographic system.

The many layers, cut windows, overlapping bands, and scales form a complex visual hierarchy and expert demonstration of depth.

Mapping Your Hometown: Tactile Topography Full Scale

Iselle F.’s map demonstrates a clear visual hierarchy; by layering folded paper underneath a cut grid, and overlapping fern-like branches and precise fanning on top, a structurally striking visual system materializes.

These innovative paper elements conceptually represent the Kumeyaay Nation, Southwestern Ranchos, animal wildlife, and urbanized areas.

Mapping Your Hometown: Tactile Topography Full Scale

Sabrina C.’s full scale paper map utilizes negative space to the fullest extent, forming irregular yet organized shapes webbed above several layers of cut paper.

Water systems, architectural structures, geographic formations, and outdoor arenas are represented imaginatively through paper lattice, slivers, hatching, and fringe-like texture.

Mapping Your Hometown: Tactile Topography Full Scale

Isla B.’s intricately folded map layers residential areas, remote wilderness, running tracks, and WiFi hotspots with paper.

By manipulating the material with strategies like folding, rolling, cutting, and twisting, the work presents a complex hierarchy of forms through incredibly delicate craft.

Mapping Your Hometown: Full Scale Version 2

Students in DESG 1005 have developed 2 full-scale maps from their preliminary prototypes and iterative collage process.

The works (from left to right) by Iselle F., Sloane C., Lainey S., Campbell D., Ruby K., and Isla B. synthesize complex geographic, architectural, and personal systems into creative media. Students manipulated found materials such as cardboard, yarn, rhinestones, curved aluminum, and colored plastic to conceptually represent their systems.

The last slide displays the first and final versions of Ruby K. and Isla B.’s work; the final versions demonstrate the creative risks students took with their materials and compositions after developing their projects further.

Mapping Your Hometown: Full Scale

𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐚 𝐃. maps four overlapping systems: a town boundary, river, light pollution, and car noise.

The work translates each system through a distinct material strategy (layered cardboard, wire, reflective elements, and surface texture) building a map that is less about geographic accuracy and more about how a place is experienced.

Mapping Your Hometown

Mixed-media prototypes at half scale, a process sketch, the full-scale map, and a detail highlighting three-dimensionality by 𝐓𝐚𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧 𝐊.

Layered fabric, cardboard, push pins, thread, and found materials translate four systems into a dense, tactile field. The work moves between soft and hard, flat and dimensional, using accumulation and texture to turn the map into something physical and experiential.

Mapping Your Hometown: Full Scale

𝐍𝐨𝐚𝐡 𝐆. reflects on Hurricane Sandy along the New Jersey Shore, mapping four systems: Locals, Tourists, Dune Line/Sand, and Water.

Using wood, reflective stones, gold paper fasteners, and a raised field of cotton swabs, the work translates those systems into distinct material languages while turning the map into a tactile, dimensional surface.
