I inquire into the body’s relationship with its environment, where photography becomes both a performative act and a perceptual tool.

Scenes from our presentation, reading and exhibition at the 11th annual Walter Benjamin International Summer School in Portbou, Catalunya, Spain last week.

Our multimedia exhibition Day for Night: Landscapes of Walter Benjamin is in the now-disused customs hall of the monumental train station that looms above this small Mediterranean - Pyrenean town where Benjamin died on September 26th 1940, while fleeing the Nazis.

Huge thanks to violinist Branislav Grbic, who gave an impromptu performance for us,
extending the lyrical nature of the images on display (see video at the end). And to the organisers, in particular curator Pilar Parcerisas.

‘More Than a Sign’ is a short film about Walter Benjamin, developed in collaboration with writer Jean McNeil and filmmaker Bernard Arce and shot in 2017. This year the film has been selected for the XI International Walter Benjamin Summer School, taking place in Portbou, Catalunya, from 4–6 September.

Jean and I will present the film alongside a new small publication with the original title of our 2018 exhibition Day for Night: Landscapes of Walter Benjamin and which is comprised of a film, photography and a literary project inspired by Benjamin’s life and thought. The programme will take place at the Walter Benjamin Library, with an exhibition at the former customs hall of Portbou railway station.

Thank you to Pilar Parcerisas for the invitation, and to the Diputació de Girona and the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya for their support.

In this series of photographs, I draw with air, using plastic and the body.

These are materials which are attached to my body as I photograph them, waiting for the grammar of the wind to write a sentence that describes the evanescent truth of the moment. In these acts of performative photography, nature and culture are brought together.

London, yesterday, a heavenly wonder. People gathered to witness a once-in-a-generation eclipse; I was fascinated by the different devices everyone brought along to observe the magnitude of the solar system in motion.

Photography as Performance II - 2026

Inspired by Joy Gregory’s Catching Flies with Honey, MA Photography students came together at the Whitechapel Gallery to explore identity, memory, material culture, and sustainability - themes at the heart of Gregory’s engagement with postcolonial consciousness and material storytelling.

Through reused materials, performance, and installation, the body and everyday objects became sites of historical and cultural inquiry, unfolding across four Creative Labs centred on two themes:

• Portrait: History and Memory
• The Object: Traces of a Journey

Concept facilitated by artist and educator Diego Ferrari.

In partnership with the Whitechapel Gallery, London - Director of Participation and the MA in Photography, Kingston University. Supported by Inclusive Curriculum and Education for Sustainable Futures Bursaries
Kingston University.

ERASE (rrrhythms)🔥 is a communal performance in which encounters take place within a spatial media arrangement. A fifteen-channel video installation functions as a ‘newsroom’ for a collectively performed ‘procession’, integrating walking, resting, reading, and presence in spaces within MMU's Holden Gallery and beyond. The moving images form a living archive and offer coincidental and simultaneous juxtapositions of reflections and experiences captured during previous performances in ‘uncertain’ circumstances. Four screens present new, alternative Chinese perspectives on indigenous matriarchy, dance in the Muslim world, and what in the West would be called ‘neurodivergence’. These images have been interpreted by young Chinese artists and compiled by Tiong Ang as a counterpart to his own group's performances in the Netherlands, Indonesia, and Romania.

Diego Ferrari’s practice explores the intersection of photography, performance, and spatial experience. At the core of his practice is an inquiry into the relationship between the body and its environment, where photography becomes both a performative act and a perceptual tool.

Thank you to everyone who visited our exhibition ‘Embodying Space: Photography as Performance’ by our MA and final-year BA Photography students at @filet_space!

Audiences engaged with the elements, extending their senses into the sounds of minerals, the presence of air, the essence of earth and written text - an interactive, performative experience that activated the exhibition’s elements and expanded the perceptions we evolved with students towards new knowledge.

Concept facilitated by artist and educator Diego Ferrari (@thediegoferrari), alongside Kingston alumni Shona Goolab (@shonsvisuals_) and Dylan Ford (@dylanlennonford), as well as MA and final-year BA Photography students from Kingston University, in collaboration with @whitechapelgallery.

This project was supported by the Education for Sustainable Futures Initiative – Inclusive Curricula Bursaries from Kingston University, in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery and FILET Space. Thanks to architect Matei Mitrache for contributing to the design of the exhibition.
