Join us for the first iteration of our Material Cultures workshop and lecture series, Reclamation Praxis on Sunday, October 25th from 1-4 PM @thedigschicago.

This event brings together artist-educators Naomi Coke and AJ McClennon for a conversation on wild clay, sustainable artmaking, and the cultural histories held within the materials we gather and create with.

The conversation facilitated by @samiahfulcher will be shortly followed by a hands-on wild clay processing demonstration led by Naomi. Materials provided. No prior experience necessary.

Naomi Coke: @fearofablackfemme is an oral historian, community design practitioner, and land artist whose practice draws on Jamaican Maroon lineages, material reclamation, and intergenerational land healing. With a background in regenerative building practices and archival research, Naomi’s work focuses on place-based approaches to repair, relation building, and Black-Indigenous futurity.

AJ McClenon: @middlenamejanae is an assistant professor at SAIC and active multidisciplinary artist in Chicago by way of Washington, D.C. whose work brings personal narrative into conversation with empirical data to explore sociopolitical concepts of truth, cultural amnesia, and their absurdities.

$10-20 sliding scale suggested donation. 100% of donations go directly to our featured artists for sharing their time and expertise. Priority for BIPOC artists, educators, and community members.

Spaces are limited. RSVP link in bio. by @thedigschicago

We can't believe it's been almost a month since the empty bowl fundraiser! We had SUCH a great time welcoming you all to the studio to admire the hard work of our artist members and to share in some delicious sundaes 🍦 🍒

Since the fundraiser, we're so excited to share that we've surpassed our fundraising goals and have brought in 2 new Rohde kilns to our community studio! This means faster firing times, faster classwork pickup, and all-around more efficiency in the way that The Digs runs ⭐️ and it's all thanks to YOU! 🫶 by @thedigschicago

🏺 **START THE CRAWL WITH US!**

Before we embark on our Chicago Ceramics Crawl weekend, we figured we’d warm up with a Meet + Greet at The Digs on Friday, October 9 from 6–9 PM.

Come meet fellow ceramicists and clay enthusiasts from around the city, bring a handmade bowl for our Bowl Swap, and spend the evening with some of the people you’ll be crawling with all weekend.

A big shoutout to our friends at @ceramicsupplychicago, who are sponsoring this year’s Crawl and popping up for the night with clay samples and a little look into their Elk Grove operation. They supply so many Chicago studios and we’re very grateful to have them joining us for the night. ❤️

To celebrate Chicago Exhibition Week (CXW), the Digs is hosting a ONE NIGHT ONLY exhibition at the studio! September 17th, 5:30pm - 10pm

Digs member Jeremy Carter curates "Meld Form," a collaboration between artist and curator exploring how context and display can further activate the viewer experience. By experimenting with installation concepts, presentation, and play within the maker's space, the series shines a light on Chicago’s creative community. Together, artist and curator invite new perspectives through immersive environment-building. In this iteration, Carter explores the nostalgic tone of Saylor’s work through found objects and personal objects from the artist

Charlotte Saylor is a Chicago-based artist whose practice involves collecting, composing, and painting. She forages for discarded objects such as cardboard or VHS tapes, arranging them in unexpected ways while still allowing for their previous forms to linger. The color, texture, and rhythm of the paint, whether it’s oil, acrylic, casein, or encaustic, recontextualize these objects, framing and holding them with care.
