I’m a little late to posting this, but here are some of the photos from our recent trip to hunt the White River Group! It was 🤬 cold the first day, and snow covered most of the exposures, but even so Maddie managed to find a very nice Paleolagus skull, which ended up being the best find of the trip. So she beat me!! We also went to the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs for the first time! I hope you enjoy these pictures of Maddie looking cute while unfitting music plays. 😝

Dinosaurs are my favorite thing to collect by far, but I also have a special place in my heart for lungfish material since I used to have a pet lungfish many years ago (RIP Darwin)! This Ceratodus(?) tooth from Morocco is by far the biggest one in my collection, and is actually not terribly much smaller than the biggest lungfish tooth ever found!

I’ve been very tooth heavy lately, so here’s the only complete hadrosaur claw I’ve ever found! This one is from the Lance Formation and came from a pretty large Edmontosaurus hand. Finding this one was a bit of a surprise, as it kinda just rolled out of loose overburden that didn’t have much fossil content in it!

This right here is the most important tooth in my entire collection. There’s a little bit of a story behind it, if you care to read it!
.
When I started college, I really struggled, but not with the courses or the work load, I struggled with identity. I thought I knew what career I wanted to pursue, but every time I went to class, sat down to study, or worked in the lab, I just felt like an imposter. My grades and attendance suffered greatly, and ultimately I lost a $46,000 scholarship and was kicked out of school. I ended up just working a few entry level jobs for many years while I tried to figure my life out, tried going back to school, and did get my Associate’s Degree, but still felt no closer to having my answer.
.
Fast forward to 2018, I’ve recently reconnected with my former boss’s boss from my days as a teenager volunteering at the Brevard Zoo, who you guys may know as Chris DeLorey (owner of @dinodepot ), and I start doing a little free volunteer work at his “Dino Lab” on Tuesday nights. Well as it turns out, he would run dig trips out West for some of the major zoo donors, and one trip had a vacancy. I’d always been obsessed with dinosaurs as a kid, and learning to prep fossils at the Dino Lab the past several months had been awesome, so I thought it would be an incredible experience to go dig dinosaurs myself. So I said screw it, and I maxed out my credit card and bought the tickets.
.

So in September of 2018 I went on my first dig trip out to the illustrious Judith River Formation! I had some good luck on day 1, found some cool bones, did a little museum tour, so I was feeling great about the trip already. On day 2 I found a nice chunk of a hadrosaur limb bone. I spent an hour or so chiseling it out of the sandstone, finally pulled it out, but then realized I hadn’t done so cleanly and there was actually a chunk still going into the wall. The first knife strike into the wall shot out this beautiful tyrannosaur tooth that I didn’t even realize was there, and in that exact moment of discovery it all finally clicked in my head and I realized THIS is what I wanted to do with my life. A lot of my reels lately have been things not for sale since I’m kinda just finally posting most of my collection, but here’s one thing that is for sale: a rooted iguanodontid tooth from the Isle of Wight! DM me for more info!

Sauropods are maybe the group of dinosaurs that I have the most species represented by teeth in my collection, but I’ve hardly posted any of them! So here’s my best personal find Apatosaurine tooth from the Morrison Formation. With the revival of Brontosaurus in recent years, there are currently 3 apatosaurines accepted as valid in the Morrison Formation: Brontosaurus excelsus, Apatosaurus ajax, and Apatosaurus louisae. This tooth could belong to any one of them!

This one may not be the biggest most badass tooth in my collection, but it’s one of my favorites! This is one of the very few Appalachian dinosaur teeth I own, a rooted hadrosaurid tooth from the Eutaw Formation of Mississippi! Dinosaur remains from the Eastern United States are incredibly rare, and are pretty much all found in marine deposits. The conditions in Laramidia were much more favorable for fossilization of dinosaurs, so any dinosaur material from my part of the country is incredibly special! This tooth is unidentifiable, for the time being at least (the double ridge is interesting), but the known hadrosaurs from Appalachia include Eotrachodon, Hypsibema, Lophorhothon, and Hadrosaurus, from which the whole family of dinosaurs received its name!

Today I got a few cool new goodies in the mail, including this fantastic Judith River ceratopsian tooth! Unfortunately the teeth of ceratopsians in most formations aren’t distinguishable from one another, so isolated teeth like this one can’t be ID’ed with any confidence, but it’s still a beauty! Best one I’ve owned from this formation.

I can’t believe I never posted this tooth here! This little gem is a fully rooted cf. Troodon tooth with a sweet replacement tooth groove that I found in the Lance Formation last summer. When it first rolled out I thought it was a rooted Didelphodon canine, but when I noticed the big serrations I couldn’t believe my own eyes! 🤯 Definitely one of the top 5 best personal finds of my career!

Here’s a cf. Marshosaurus tooth from the Lourinhã Formation of Portugal that compares very well with my Marshosaurus bicentissimus from the Morrison Formation of Wyoming (see comparison photos at the end of the video). It’s always fun when areas that are separated by thousands of miles today have nearly identical faunas, because in the Mesozoic they were connected or very close!

This is another tooth I picked up in Tucson that I’m tickled about, a leptoceratopsid called Cerasinops hodgskissi! These are extremely rare in the Two Medicine Formation, this is actually the only one I’ve seen in person, and it’s rooted at that!
