The Art of Lazarus Massavo. Through his work, the Nigerian visual artist explores themes of resilience, transformation, and hope, translating lived experiences into surreal visual narratives. Born in Makoko, a historic waterfront community often defined by adversity, Massavo’s artistic journey began in 2015 when The Seed of the True Vine Foundation (TSTTVF) introduced him to art as a possibility beyond circumstance. The mentorship he received opened his perspective, inspiring him to challenge societal expectations and embrace creativity as a tool for personal and social transformation.

Drawing inspiration from the stilted wooden structures and everyday life within his community, Massavo creates human figures that echo strength, survival, and growth. Working primarily with pastel, graphite, and oil, his practice merges reality with childlike fantasy, offering viewers a hopeful vision rooted in imagination and rebirth.

Currently studying Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Lagos, Lazarus Massavo represents a new generation of Nigerian artists using art not only as expression, but as a means to reimagine the world around them.

The Art of Toyo Jo. Through his work, the Nigerian visual artist creates pieces that explore identity, culture, and human emotion, often expressed through bold and vibrant colours. His artistic journey began in childhood, sparked by a simple drawing of himself and his mother that drew admiration and revealed an early passion for visual expression. Growing up in Nigeria played a significant role in shaping the figures, narratives, and cultural elements that now define his work.

Although he pursued architecture at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, his connection to art never faded. His exposure to design tools like drawing boards influenced his early experimentation, leading him to adopt plywood as a painting surface. This phase marked the beginning of his exploration of materials and technique.

A turning point in his practice came after his participation in the “70 Years of Music in Nigeria Art Residency” hosted by PopCentral. Following this experience, he transitioned fully into working with acrylic on canvas, expanding both his medium and creative expression.

Working primarily with pencils and acrylics, Toyo Jo’s style is defined by its striking use of colour and its ability to reveal beauty within imperfection. His works are deeply rooted in personal and cultural identity, reflecting the emotions, stories, and lived experiences that continue to inspire his artistic voice.
