✨the summer of bitter and sweet by jen ferguson ✨

this book was incredible and i’m so glad it exists. we follow Louisa and her friends as they work in her family’s ice cream shop over the summer and the book is true to it’s title (bitter but also sweet)! Lou is also dealing with her estranged father who’s trying to come back into her life (through whatever means) against her wishes and grappling with her feelings for King, a best friend from years prior who she hasn’t seen in years.

there was a lot going on, but it all melded together so seamlessly to make a super compelling story!! i especially appreciated the conversations around being biracial (Lou is Métis and white) and the many layers that come with that. i also loved Louisa’s journey with understanding her sexuality, and realizing that she wasn’t broken or “wrong”. i did have some issues with some of the narratives she was telling herself at points in the book, but they were addressed later in the book and i do think it’s human to try to find reasons for being the way that you are.

i combo eyeball/earball read this and i really liked the narrator!

✨Weavingshaw by Heba Al-Wasity✨

OH MY GODDDDD THIS BOOK

I’m so sad I finished this because I never wanted it to end (but it’s a series so WE WILL GET MORE!!)!! This is one of those books that I couldn’t put down, and gave me the feeling I chase when I read anything, especially fantasy!!

I did get to like 80% and realized “oh...I guess...this is not... a standalone???” I don’t know how to explain it, but it *felt* like a standalone for some reason?? I say that in the most complimentary of ways. The writing was sooo good and kept me engaged the entire way through. I almost want to reread it right now (i’m not going to for...reasons...no one look at my ARC pile!! don’t do it!!).

this is not romance forward, the burn is slowwww, but it had a great plot to tension ratio and i loved the progression of everything. i honestly find myself preferring fantasy that is not as romance heavy because I often feel like the balance is skewed in favor of romance too often.

anywyas!! read this immediately if our tastes overlap because I LOVED THIS and am begging for more!! oooh does it help if i say the MMC has Kaz Brekker + Arin of Nizhal vibes!! if so go ahead and pick this up and scream in my dms!!

✨For She Is Wrath by Emily Varga✨

gosh there is so much I loved about this book! i love stories with revenge, a stabby fmc, flashbacks, and second chance romance so obviously this book was a home run for me!! it also had djinn magic which I find really cool and I feel like I’ve not read too many books with djinns!

when the book starts, Dania is wrongfully imprisoned and her journey and growth in this book as she seeks to right wrongs and exact retribution was so satisfying to read. i loved the way magic was used in this, it didn’t feel like a super specific magic system but it still made enough sense for me to buy in.

the romance was lovely in this, anytime we meet a fictional enemy that is also hot i am hoping for a romance hahahahah I AM WHO I AM, OKAY?

some parts of this book did feel repetitive but also, i am an “AND ANOTHER THING” type of person so it being repetitive makes it also realistic to me haha.

ALSO, TIL this was a retelling of the count of monte cristo heh, how many times am i gonna be surprised that a book is a retelling??? 2x in 2026 so far lol.

have you read this one?? if you’re participating in #TheDiverseBaseline— what did you/will you read for this prompt??

✨Homeseeking by Karissa Chen✨

Historical fiction is often hit or miss for me and this book was a huge HIT. What an incredible read/listen!! I found Haiwen and Suchi’s stories so compelling and loved the exploration of their life through a generational lens. There’s just something about seeing characters at so many stages in their lives (and not just the main characters).

This book did multiple timelines in a way that I haven’t seen before, and I thought it was so clever and interesting. It was easy to follow but I had no idea what was going to happen to any of the characters. Sometimes timeline jumps annoy me, because i’m more invested in one time than the rest— but I found myself equally invested in all of their eras.

I was left satisfied, but wanting so much more at the end. I wanted details on side characters and just MORE in general but I also really liked how it ended (is this a confusing thing to say??? maybe).

The narrators did a great job, and never took me out of the book even though there are timeline/age jumps.

✨the diverse baseline recs and tbr: march✨

yall i’m personally offended by how quickly february is flying by, esp bc i’m reading so fucking slow rn and it’s really pissing me off. my brain is just struggling and i’m having some health issues and its just generally not a great time over here rn but ALAS, i’m prioritizing my TDB books and hoping for the best!

as you can see, i’ve not read anything previously for the first two prompts and that’s okay, i would’ve never even known if i wasn’t participating in this challenge which is one of the reasons i love it so much (i know i say this a lot but it’s true!!! we all gotta start somewhere and for two of these prompts that somewhere for me is in march!!!)

but ANYWAYS, if you’re participating in #TheDiverseBaseline, I’d love to hear how it’s going for you!!! and also i’m down to hear books you’re looking forward to reading for this challenge too!! if you’re curious about the challenge you can clicked the pinned post and/or the carrd in my linktree!

if you’re not, you can still tell me about books you’re looking forward to reading or any new releases i should have on my radar!!! by @hyperfixatedreader
