✨Books Gowns and Crowns 2026 Recap✨

I had the best time supporting my friend @wrenblackburne this weekend at @booksgownsandcrowns in San Diego this past weekend.

I am SO proud of them and all their hard work and seeing it all come together at this event. I know sometimes we have rose colored glasses when it comes to our friends but Wren is truly one of the most talented authors I’ve read and I’m so excited for more readers to get to experience their books. Wren works so hard at their writing and I’m ready for everyone else to get to fall in love with the world they’ve created.

It’s also always fun to see friends and get to attend fun events. Also proud to say we made it to the top 5 at @brambleromance trivia, bringing back my reigning status as being top at their trivia.

The only way I can get these cats to snuggle - edit them together! Although based on how well things are going, I’m hopeful Merlot and Peppercorn will be cuddling by winter 🤞🏼 I may be delulu but a girl can dream!

Anyway, August was another busy month, full of concerts, a new addition to the family, and traveling. I always love Leo season, but me and my wallet are tired 😪 Here’s to a more lowkey month still full of delicious food, quality friend time, and (hopefully) more books!

✨ Glimmers:
- A big and obvious one was getting to meet @hyperfixatedreader and @kathyslibrary while visiting Chicago! I’m so grateful my little page yapping about books has let me meet up with so many cool people who also love reading.

- The main reason we traveled to Chicago - the BTS concert! It felt unreal to finally get to see a group I’ve been listening to off and on throughout so much of my youth. I still remember repeatedly watching the Dope MV to learn the dance and trying to get my friends into it 😂 So getting to experience their new (and some old!) music and scream the lyrics with 60,000 other fans felt surreal.

- We adopted a new kitten! Peppercorn is a fluffy void kitty with a single brain cell and a heart full of love. It was a bit stressful trying to integrate him into our household at first (specifically for Merlot, our sweet senior cat who’s loved being an only child). However, they’ve recently started playing and consistently take naps near each other on the couch!

- Poppy concert and vintage shopping in SLC

- Finally tried Bombay Grill downtown and HELLO? A $20 lunch buffet that includes lamb vindaloo, saag paneer, and bottomless chai? They also have kheer and gulab jamun, so I was in heaven 🤤

Aseel is a law graduate currently looking for evacuation to attend university in Italy, France, or the UK. She is specifically asking for anyone in any humanitarian, academic, or legal organization with knowledge in evacuation programs (University Corridors/lUPALS), or in direct contact with the British Embassy in Jerusalem, the UK FCDO, or any official UK government or humanitarian channel related to evacuation to contact her.

This is a serious request for real intervention or guidance to reach the official evacuation pathway. Aseel has confirmed university admissions and submission of all required documents to move forward with evacuation, but her access to enrollment is blocked due to the evacuation process.

For Aseel, this is not just an academic opportunity, but her entire life path currently suspended on one critical step. Aseel and her family have been displaced since October 2023 and were only able to make a campaign in July 2025.

Aseel’s first immediate need is getting contact with someone that can help her with the evacuation process. Once Aseel is able to evacuate, she will need financial assistance. I will be donating $1 USD (up to $50 USD) per red, green, white, and/or black book stack tagging me and posted with the tag #poppystackforaseel. Looking for a queer hidden identity romance full of heart, book love, and queer community?

I picked this book up on large part for #TheDiverseBaseline to read a book by a racialized author with historically marginalized religious representation (in this case, the fmc is Black & Ashkenazi Jewish) so thank you to @bookish.millennial @themargherita.s @hyperfixatedreader

Yael is a school librarian with a hidden secret: she runs a podcast critiquing classics on school curriculums behind the persona “Elle.” After a run in with her Bipolar 2, she realizes she needs help and finds it through a mysterious new podcast editor, Kevin.

Meanwhile, Kevin (who goes by Ravi in most of his life) flees from a hookup wanting commitment through Yael’s apartment window, not realizing she is home. Yael is glad she never needs to face her roommate-abandoner Ravi again... until he happens to sign up as a volunteer for the queer bookclub she runs for her school.

Hidden Identity romance is one of my favorite tropes for a reason! I love the hatred sizzling in person, yet the slow build up of feelings online. Both our main characters start feeling so confused when their IRL nemesis starts looking kinda hot!

I love getting to see such a wide array of queer characters in this MF romance. Both our main characters are bisexual, making perfect role models for their high school students trying to figure out growing up queer.

Yael’s Bipolar 2, while not super active during the story, was super relatable to my personal experiences with Bipolar 2. The worries of being “too much” for a partner was so real, and at times I wanted to pull her into a big hug.

I also loved Ravi in a semi-parental role, trying his best to help his brother and niece, and the added conflict his situation brought to the romance. I often don’t like when men say they are “too busy” for their female love interest, but in this case taking care of family made him that much more lovable.

I recommend to anyone looking for a fun but heart-filled romance full of diverse characters and lots of lovable kids.

MID-YEAR CHECK-IN

it’s so weird to think that 2026 is halfway done, but when i saw my good friend Connor posting a mid-year booksta check-in with some of his friends last week i figured that it’s as good of a time as any to pause and take a look at my stats so far! i use storygraph to track my reading, and to log my progress in #TheDiverseBaseline ’s yearly challenge (#TDB2026) too, so it was super easy to pull my data from their Stats page too. i’ll admit— i’ve fallen a bit behind in the monthly prompts for The Diverse Baselines, especially as i’ve been in a major nonfiction slump (so if you have recommendations for the may and june prompts of nonfiction by Central/Mid African and North African authors, please share them with me in the comments!), but i’ll circle back to them before the year is done. i also definitely did read a book for the trans joy/messiness prompt and just forgot to add it to my journal spread— whoops!

as a disclaimer — i recognize that 106 books is a pretty hefty amount to read in 6 months, and i’m not posting this to brag, to “flex,” or to judge anyone else’s reading speed/amounts. i read incredibly fast, and i always have! i also don’t have a particularly robust social life; i spend most of my time either at work or reading on my couch, and that’s honestly exactly how i like it

this month, i’m working to get back on track with my prompts for The Diverse Baseline — here’s what i’ve picked out:
-translated from a non-European language: Human Acts by Han Kang
-by a West African author: Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah (fun fact; Chain Gang All-Stars was intended as a short story for his debut collection but was expanded into a full length novel!)
-by a Caribbean Author: An Arcane Inheritance by Kamliah Cole

i’m also reading Green Fuse Burning by Tiffany Morris for a prompt from June because my copy was on backorder from my local indie, but it just arrived! Tiffany’s a Mi’kmaw author whose newest book, CARNALIS, came out this past March; i can’t wait to get my hands on it too:)

Belated post sharing my June #thediversebaseline book challenge reads.

For "nonfiction by a North African author, I went with The Seven Necessary Sins of Women And Girls by Mona Eltahawy. It sounds like a fascinating feminist book and I'm really looking forward to it.

For "fiction by an author indigenous to occupied Canada" I'm planning to read Green Fuse Burning by Tiffany Morris. This quick horror read has been on my tbr list for ages and I've heard great things.

For "About parenting, adoption, or foster care by a racialized author" I chose Cash Delgado Is Living The Dream by Tehlor Kay Mejia. I read it earlier this month and LOVED it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hey, book besties! Long time no post but I'm finally sharing my March and April reads. As usual, it was mostly a mix of ARCs and books for The Diverse Baseline book challenge. I also discovered several authors that were new to me and enjoyed some seasonal reads that feel perfect for summer ☀️

I've been on a bit of a break from social media this month so I hope everyone is doing amazing. And I'm wondering if I missed any major book drama 👀

Hi Friends! I hope the Sunday Scaries aren’t treating you too badly!

Alas, we are already halfway through the month, but I made it here eventually. Between traveling at the beginning of the month and then being short on spoons thanks to some personal stuff going on, I fell off the wagon a bit. I am happy to be back and finally sharing my May recap with you all though!
May was a big reading month for me! Not only did I add in a bonus prompt for TDB, but I read several Bad Bitch Book Club picks, and celebrated the release of Keshe Chow’s new book Strange Familiars which I was on the street team for!
For my TDB prompts, I really loved the audiobook narrations of both Marsha and Mickey Chambers Shakes It Up! A good narrator really makes or breaks an audiobook (as I am sure you all know). This was my first book by Charish Reid and I will definitely be seeking out some of their other work. I had a lot of fun with this one!
May’s Books & Cooks was a SE Asian recipe inspired by Reimena Yee’s Malaysian heritage. It was delicious and I promise the video is coming soon! I need to hurry up and choose a recipe for June….

🌧 April Wrap-Up 🌧

I feel like I started the year strong, but I've just not been reading that much the past couple of months. I guess I'm in a bit of a slump 😒

Still, 10 books is nothing to turn one's nose up at. They were all pretty good reads. I started to highlight my favorites of the month, and it ended up being 8 of the 10 books I read, so yeah, it was a good month quality-wise, if not quantity 😆
