J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge
Sanibel Island, FL

Visited Ding Darling today with my mom. Always a good time. Didn't actually get much footage so I slapped this together, don't worry you don't need to read the text.

Also, did you know Florida had a state play called Cross & Sword? I had it printed for me so I could read it, probably bad but I guess it was pretty popular during its run in St. Augustine.

Also also, was able to snag a DVD of the film Trans that I posted about a while back. Entire thing was shot around Ft. Myers and it's pretty good! Great soundtrack and dreamy visuals/pacing.

Punta Rassa Telegraph Station - Fort Myers, FL

This innocuous little building, located near the Sanibel causeway off a side street from the toll plaza, served as a telegraph relay station from apparently all the way back to the Spanish American War for 50 years until it was retired in the 1940's.

It sits next to the parking lot of what I believe is a condominium development. There are no markers or plaques or anything showing its significance and there seems to be zero upkeep. Hurricane Ian appears to have knocked it off its foundation and stripped it to its shell.

I find it interesting that it's still here in a place like Fort Myers where so much Old Florida kitsch & culture has fallen to the tyranny of progress. From the shore, which is just across the small, two-lane street that runs past this structure, you can faintly see the skyline of Fort Myers Beach, where Florida's most invasive species, the snowbird, will be flocking here in a matter of months. There they will stretch out on the beach amongst the rubble which still hasn't been completely cleared some 2 years after Ian. Many of the old business and residences of Fort Myers Beach are gone and will never come back, but there's a Margaritaville Resort there now and that's progress.

Thanks to @eggplantparmesan for telling me about this place, it's not far from my mom's house and I never even knew it existed.
