Full video on YouTube. In this foot independence lesson, we cover some basic to advanced exercises you can use to help develop your limb independence. For beginners and intermediate players, I think it’s best to start with three limbs on “auto pilot“ and run patterns or grids on your remaining foot. #drums #drumlessons #thedrummerbrain taken in Los Angeles, California by @thedrummerbrain

Full video on YouTube: “Paradiddle Power Lesson 6 Breakdown.” Just like in the book “Groove Exercises…” Lesson 6 is where the rubber meets the road, we combine 16th note partials in the kick and snare. These combinations, which are almost endless, make up the majority of the grooves you’re gonna play in modern music. So there’s really no limit to how much you can practice this stuff. Happy shedding to you! #drums #drumlessons #thedrummerbrain taken in Los Angeles, California by @thedrummerbrain

Full video on YouTube. “Ornaments for Fills,” in this video we do a deep look at ornaments and how we can use them to add a final layer of depth to our sound. If you listen to any of the great drummers, not only are they playing Patterns and rudiments, They are also adding ornaments to both set up and upgrade the phrases that they play. Ornaments take some time to make them feel natural, but intensive study will yield great results. Also just a reminder, the correct response to making a mistake is laughter. Happy drums to you!

Full video on YouTube “Three levels of part writing.” Intermediate writing is not only about being able to play to more advanced music like odd time signatures, it also means loosening up some of your adherence to strict patterns. Having a general theme and working around it is the goal, rather than playing exactly specific notes. #drums #drumlessons #thedrummerbrain taken in Los Angeles, California by @thedrummerbrain

Full video on YouTube. “Paradiddle power lesson 5 and applications.” Lesson 5 is where things really start to get tricky in this book, instead of keeping your left hand on the snare now we bring it over to the hi hat and move it back-and-forth for 16th note partials. For a full play through of this lesson check out the YouTube channel or better yet, buy the book :-) Here is one exercise from that lesson that I use a lot as a microfill. Remember, the sticking is always the same RLRR LRLL. #drums #drumlessons #thedrummerbrain taken in Los Angeles, California by @thedrummerbrain

Full video on YouTube. An introduction to melodic fill playing. Focus on the ride cymbal/kick, that’s my Melody, we “fill in the cracks” between with our snare and toms. A lot of drummers learn this method of playing when they study jazz, but it can be applied to any style and is often overlooked as a very musical way to phrase ideas.
