First landscape tintype in NZ! 🤍

Driving down to a lake and I see this amazing tree, slam the breaks on, and turn back around to get this shot. Sometimes, unexpected places have the best gems like this!

New Zealand is such a beautiful place, I'm so happy to be here doing what I love most ❤️‍🔥

Sweet Bud 🤍

My muse, best friend, the other half of my soul - my purpose.
A few months ago, my sweet boy passed away very unexpectedly, pulling me into the darkest time in my life.
I've had to step away from tintype shoots, work, and well life as I knew it.
He was a vital part of my process, my days, work, art, my world revolved around him. We built a life together where he was by my side every single moment, and now, I'm lost in the silence he left behind. In losing him, I lost myself.
That day he left, a deep pain accompanied me that now echoes in my soul.

As I continue to navigate this loss, I will be slowly returning to tintype shoots. But like grief, the journey won't always be linear. Thank you to everyone who has been patient in waiting for availability or to use gift vouchers. I truly appreciate your support.

Today, I'm sharing with you all my favourite piece I've ever made. A tintype of Bud frozen in silver, forever.
A piece of him that will always remain.

I carry you with me, as I always have.
I love you endlessly, Bud 🤍 by @theduskinus

I'll be selling prints of my work for the very first time at @theirongatetattooconvention next weekend!
It feels like the perfect place to begin this journey of putting my wet plate photographs out into the world through print 🤍

I made this 8x10 tintype, Skeleton Tree, on my first trip to New Zealand last year, during a time of incredibly heavy grief.

I'd lost my dog Bud about 11 months earlier, and much of that year had been spent staring at the ceiling, aimlessly walking around our neighbourhood, and feeling completely lost. I'd become disconnected from so much of the world, including the things I once loved.

Skeleton Tree is part of my ongoing body of work, Trade All My Tomorrows. I'd originally intended to keep this piece for myself, but after sitting with it for almost a year, I think it's time to let it exist out in the world.

Around the time I made this photograph, I was invited to be part of Iron Gate, an invitation that unknowingly changed the direction of my wet plate photography.

I'd been exploring the process on and off for almost a decade, mostly keeping my work to myself. What followed was a year of travelling internationally, sharing this historic process at tattoo conventions, meeting incredible people, and finding a sense of connection I hadn't felt in a long time.

I'm incredibly grateful to the tattoo community and the artists who have welcomed me, trusted me to photograph them, and shared in my love for history, craft, and keeping this beautiful old process alive.

These first prints have been produced by my friend Tyson at @foxlabfineart. Each is hand-signed, printed on 8x10 fine art metallic gloss paper using archival pigment inks.

It feels quite full circle to be bringing this work to the place where so much of this adventure began.

See you in Sydney 🤍

Tintype Portraits of Thao

Last month, I travelled from Australia to Vietnam for @inkartnation_convention where I created 1850s wet plate photographs by hand-pouring collodion onto blackened metal before sensitising each plate in silver nitrate.

How wonderful is it to live a life doing what I love most, and to meet people like Thao along the way. Not only is he an incredibly skilled artist, but a truly kind person.

Thank you for your time, Thao. Meeting and photographing you was a highlight of my trip, one I’ll carry with me for a long time 🤍

A tintype of Nick from @milesawayhc for Pay To Come Too, an upcoming group show in Sydney curated by @shalxvx and @thesaddestday 🤍

For this exhibition, I wanted to create a series of portraits of people who helped shape my youth growing up in hardcore. Miles Away were such a big part of that, from going to shows at HQ at a really young age to the music and friendships that have remained.

For Nick’s portrait, I wanted to draw inspiration from Miles Away’s album Endless Roads. It’s an album that has helped me navigate a lot of loss and grief throughout my life, and one that has stayed with me ever since.

Each portrait is made using the wet plate collodion process, dating back to the 1850s. Handcrafted and entirely one of a kind, these portraits are my way of preserving a small part of the people, music and community that have meant so much to me over the years.

Really grateful to Nick for being part of this and to Shal and Rudzy for having me. 🤍

A tintype of Mawds from @breakevenaus for Pay To Come Too, a group show curated by Shal and Rudzy opening tonight at The Ox in Sydney 🤍

For this exhibition, I wanted to create a series of portraits of people who helped shape my youth growing up in hardcore, and Mawds was someone I knew I wanted to photograph.

Watching Break Even play at HQ was such a big part of my younger years. There was always something so special about Break Even shows. The energy, the positivity and that overwhelming feeling of being part of something much bigger than yourself.

Beyond the music, Mawds is genuinely one of the kindest people you’ll meet. He’s given so much to the Australian music scene and has this incredible way of making anyone feel welcome. Whether you’ve known him for years or have only just met, he treats you like an old friend.

Made using the wet plate collodion process dating back to the 1850s, this portrait is entirely handcrafted and one of a kind. A small way of preserving the people and music that have meant so much to me over the years.

So grateful to Mawds for being part of this, and to Shal and Rudzy for bringing it all together.

And I’ll forever have my fingers crossed for another Break Even show haha 🤍

Getting my portrait made on glass by my friend Boris in Vietnam 🤍

I recently travelled from Australia to Vietnam to shoot wet plate, and while I was there I got to spend a day with Boris out in the countryside. Which, naturally, meant almost immediately making up chemistry, comparing recipes and talking about silver nitrate and collodion for hours.

I’ve adored Boris’ work for a long time, and before travelling to Vietnam I knew I wanted to ask him to make my portrait. I am so rarely on this side of the camera, usually I’m the one under the dark cloth, covered in silver nitrate and asking someone not to move for an unreasonable amount of time.

There is something quite strange and special about surrendering a process you know so intimately into someone else’s hands. I trusted Boris’ vision completely, and I absolutely love what he made.

We spent the day riding motorbikes through the countryside, eating incredible local food, mixing chemistry and talking endlessly about this 175 year old process that has somehow taken over both of our lives. At one point I was on the back of Boris’ motorbike, winding through small roads far from home, and I remember thinking how completely surreal and wonderful life can be sometimes.

That a process invented so long ago could somehow lead me here, from Australia to the Vietnamese countryside, with silver nitrate stains on my hands, a piece of glass carrying my likeness, and a friendship built through a shared obsession with making photographs the slowest and most difficult way possible.

Wet plate has given me so much more than photographs. It has brought some of the most wonderful people into my life, carried me to places I never imagined I would go, and given me moments I know I’ll hold onto forever. I don’t think I’ll ever stop being grateful for where it continues to take me.

Thank you Boris, for the beautiful piece of glass, for sharing your knowledge so openly, for driving me around the countryside, feeding me, and for a day I’ll always remember.

Bisous bisous, Boris 🤍 by @theduskinus

Dan on 4x5 Ambrotype

After shooting some glass plates of the backpieces tattooed by Dan — I wanted to see how wet plate would render his tattoos.

The collodion process is sensitive to UV and blue light, so any ink with a blue undertone can almost disappear into the skin. For this 4x5 plate, I used softer lighting, which gave a much more subtle result — especially compared to the bold look of the backpieces he’s tattooed.

One of the things I love about wetplate is how differently each plate responds.

Thanks for sitting for this, Dan! by @theduskinus

Tintype of @davelepage_ for Pay To Come Too, an upcoming group show in Sydney curated by @shalxvx and @thesaddestday 🤍

For this show, I wanted to photograph people who shaped my youth growing up in the hardcore scene, a community that has given me so much connection and belonging over the past two decades.

Dave’s portrait was inspired by Carpathian’s album Isolation, a record that had a huge impact on me growing up and has stayed with me ever since.

Made using the wet plate collodion process dating back to the 1850s, each portrait is handcrafted and entirely one of a kind. A way of preserving a small part of the people and music that have meant so much to me.

So grateful to Dave for being part of this and to Shal and Rudzy for having me 🤍l
