BTS Fieldwork & Research for my @artpartner submission, 2026. Fieldwork & Photography: @thebohogenz @phaythunusual_ Research work & Mixed media painting: @thebohogenz One of the things that stayed with me putting this project together was how easily an ecological crisis can become normalized. I went to Mpape to understand the environment I was painting, and what I found made me think beyond “bad waste management.” Research around the Mpape dumpsite has found high concentrations of heavy metals in surrounding soil and plants, while other research has examined environmental contamination linked to quarrying in the area. These are serious environmental issues, but for people living within them, they can become part of the everyday landscape. Waste becomes something you simply walk around. Poor drainage becomes something you prepare for. Children grow up playing in these environments without necessarily seeing them as evidence of a much larger problem. That normalization is what concerns me most. My painting, What We Made, is an attempt to make something familiar worth looking at again. The children in the work represent life, creativity and adaptation, but their ability to adapt should not make the conditions around them acceptable. For the painting, I incorporated discarded packaging, plastics, textured and found materials to physically build the accumulation of waste, while giving materials another life instead of immediately discarding them. I wanted the landscape to remain beautiful and alive against the overwhelming waste, with the children caught between these two realities: their bodies and gestures communicate play, movement and imagination, while their blue faces suggest the environmental effects of living within these conditions. I also think about what we can do within our own spaces: reuse, repurpose, consume more consciously and think twice before something becomes “waste.” These actions cannot replace the infrastructure, policies and accountability needed to address systemic environmental problems, but they can contribute to a brand new rise of ecological awareness in our communities. #earthpartner2026 #ecologicalissues by @theebohogenz

What We Made 🇳🇬 @artpartner My submission for the Earth Partner Prize, 2026. This work is a mixed-media painting. The painting examines poor waste management through the everyday experience of children growing up within an environment, Mpape, Abuja, Nigeria shaped by bad waste management and environmental neglect. Rather than representing ecological crisis primarily through images of catastrophe or destruction, I am interested in what happens when environmental problems become normalized. One of the central questions I am raising through the work is: what does it mean for my generation and the generation after mine to inherit an environment shaped by waste? More specifically, what happens when children grow up in environments where poor waste management is part of their everyday reality? The work therefore exists between two ideas: the resilience and creativity of children, i.e making recycled toys from discarded juice boxes and waste, and the responsibility of you and I, the adults, communities and systems to raise awareness on ecological issues that shape the environments we are inhabiting & the environment the younger generations are inheriting. #earthpartnerprize2026 by @theebohogenz

SOLD! ✨ Amplior has found its home. Amplior is a Latin word which means “I expand” or “I become larger.” I named this piece that title because it speaks to the heart of my upcoming collection, Free to Be opening this November. For generations, long before mine and my mother's, Black women have navigated societal pressure to embody hyper-independence and unyielding strength. To shrink ourselves in certain spaces to fit the status quo. Amplior is my response to that. It is about expanding into yourself unapologetically, taking up space, and allowing yourself to exist fully. Today, movements, (and quite literally the ones in my paintings) are reclaiming the right to be soft, feminine, and free. To take up space and do it unapologetically. As black women, we are rejecting harmful stereotypes about our skin tone and physical build, and advocating for rest, emotional vulnerability, and joy, to be free, and to be. It’s difficult to describe what it feels like watching an idea in my head become live on canvas and then leave the studio and become part of someone else’s life. I’m incredibly grateful that the first work from my Free to Be collection has found a collector before the exhibition. Cheers to creating art that continues to resonate with and find its people. Thank you @bellevie.art family, couldn't have done this without you. Big love to everyone who came out to support me at my first art showcase. 💖✨ #artshowcase #artist #freetobecollectiom #explore by @theebohogenz
