My Beloved Mom, Olateju OTG,

I don’t even know how to feel today… I truly don’t.

I have cried.I have smiled through tears.I have talked to your photo like you could answer me back.

Yet nothing about this day feels okay.

I miss you every single day, but today the absence is louder. It sits heavily on my chest and reminds me that life has never been the same since you left.

I no longer wake up to the sound of you preparing bath water for me… no small breakfast waiting… no carefully packaged lunch box for the office. Who loved like you did, Mom? Who pays attention to such little details with so much joy?

You kept rearranging my wardrobe so I wouldn’t abandon some outfits. You wanted me to look good, to step out confident, to shine. That was you always thinking ahead for me, always loving me loudly and intentionally.

I miss seeing you in your tinted low cut, your neatly fixed nails, your light makeup, the way you dressed so elegantly that people often thought you were my older sister rather than my mother. You were beauty, strength, warmth, and grace wrapped in one precious life.

But more than anything… I miss our conversations. I miss gisting with you. I didn’t just lose a mother; I lost my safest place and my forever friend.

Losing you opened my eyes to many things. I have learned that not everyone understands grief, and not everyone knows how to sit with another person’s pain. I once said goodbye to a friend not because of death, but because she could not honor the depth of my love for you. And in that painful moment, I chose to protect your memory and my heart.

Because love like ours is not something anyone gets to measure.

Mom, I want you to know this you are still deeply loved. Your name is still spoken with honor. Your impact is still alive in me.

I love you, Joan Olateju Gansallo.Two years later, and my heart still calls for you.

There are battles and realities I wish I could discuss with you in person. Moments that would have made you shake your head, hold my hands, and remind me how strong I am. I carry that strength now because you gave it to me long before I knew I would need it.
