Sprinkling a little creativity, self care, reflection and imagination onto your feed✨🌌

~~
Now that I’m looking back at the insane period job hunting and finishing my Masters has bestowed upon me, I am grateful. Because I can’t remember the last time I completed new artworks or tried a new medium, or took up exercising.

Teenage years and early 20s have felt like one big chase for approval. From friends, acquaintances, social media, school grades, job hunting. Just waiting for that next stamp of validation. And for any sensitive, hyper self aware individual, it’s hellish. This period of life has stripped it all that back. Alas, I think I am finally learning how to breathe, to feel safe being myself and 🤞🏾 not GAF because I most definitely do 80% of the time.

Also, not to mention, I’ve joined the coolest BLACK (yess capitalise that shii) school for political education. Learning about the serioussssss impacts of today’s climate+social crisis on global + local communities, what people are doing to fight this and how we can too.

This has been my soft landing after the big jump of finishing a 2 years Masters. The learning resonates, i’m not filtering myself because I am only Black person in the room. Authenticity is encouraged and care is foundational. I want to see all learning spaces with a similar feel in the future. Because when I think about it, it’s those foundational years at school that taught many of us how to filter ourselves, how to shrink ourselves and how to chase approval. I hope you are all are learning how to breathe too♥️

Another trip around the sun ☀️and I know many who did not make it this trip round. Who didn’t live to see one more birthday but I believed deserved every reason to because I knew they had much to share with the world.

For whatever reason, they were needed else where and so, on this birthday, I remember moments that celebrate life earth side. Shared moments from those behind the lens, those you don’t see, but I see and love dearly.

Grateful to share a sky, sun, moon and stars with many great humans who inspire me to keep going, especially the ones who aren’t here but I know found their cabin in the sky 💙

Go check out the Music is Black exhibition at the V & A if you can. It’s a good 2 hours of taking in our journey from being aboard inhumane ships and yet still being able to carry over such light, strength and creativity.

This exhibition is the journey of music and freedom the diaspora carried with them to different corners of the Earth 💓 From the US, the West Indies, Latin America etc. Resilience, survival, stories all captured in rhythms, dances, brush strokes and more.

~~
I know Black British culture feels so young to us, as we carry the culture of our ethnicities that don’t take root in Britain. This exhibition takes us on the journey of this to now. Where it started and how it’s going. You learn the birth of genres like Grime, Lovers rock, Garage, etc.

A self affirming exhibition and soooo innovative. I mean you wear a headset that plays music in correspondence to the display in front of you, never experienced that.

Anywayyyy🤪 loveee and defo need to go again.

Unlearning to relearn is real for so many of us right now. And as I’m picking up more black books again, your girls brain is being rewired🧠🧠🧠🧠

I can’t speak on Frantz Fanon nor W.E.B Du bois, yet, but I can speak on Minna Salami’s “Sensuous Knowledge: A Black Feminist Approach for everyone”. Her book has encouraged me to read more, especially when confronted by the innumerable amount of references decorating the pages of her book. References where she highlights the work of those who came before her and those who died before our time.

She speaks on freedom, or the lack there of, experienced by black women and society in general. Where black women are often robbed of joy, a joy that Minna defines as “freedom”. A sense of self and confidence that is constantly under attack. It’s a book that neatly packs in personal accounts and heavy research enriched by her Nigerian heritage and Finnish heritage.

In reading I’m confronting my own insecurities, conscious and subconscious. Fears relating to acceptance and self expression. Fears I can be cognisant of as I enter my mid 20’s , as I navigate institutional and working worlds cause oh my gosh…do we go through it.

What imma leave you with is:
“the biggest f*ck you a black women can give to the Europatriarchy is to take genuine pleasure in being alive “

Happy reading 📚♥️ &

I would love love love any recommendations or opinions on these books or books like this 👇🏾 💓 by @theegoddesschronicles

~ The beauty of Black literature Under the African Sun~
& Black British Book Festival steals✨

Black History Month is not over and therefore, I am not done talking about black literature nor will I ever be😘

& although I will have a separate post on the @bbbookfestival I wanted to share the ✨free books✨ I got from @penguinrandomhouse from the festival:

📚Beloved by Toni Morrison
📚Decolonising My Body By @afuahirsch

🧘🏾‍♀️
These days I’m learning more and more about the power of mindful and active reading. You know those moments where you’re nose-deep in the pages of a book, tabbing and note-taking (if needed), soaking in every word, hidden meaning, and information presented in the black lines running on a page. That realisation as a reader that you too are weaving an experience and story alongside the author – conjoining fable with fact and bringing awareness to a world unseen.

Toni Morrison explains as much in her introduction to Beloved.

There is certainly something magical that I am learning about storytelling and the power it has to reclaim history, identity, and culture.

The works of Toni Morrison and Afua Hirsch explore as much. 💓
