“You want what you could never have”

When I was 12 I skipped the first middle school open mat. My dad said I should do wrestling and I said no. I hated being out of my comfort zone. I’m glad I changed my mind for the next open mats.
As I reflect on the last 7 years of my wrestling career I realized that it was never about wrestling but it was about discovering who I am as an individual. I don’t think I would be the person I am today if it wasn’t for this sport.
I’ve met some of my best friends and so many nice people on this incredible chapter of my journey, and at the end of the day I wouldn’t change a single thing about my journey thus far.
Even though I didn’t accomplish my goal of becoming a state placer, this moment, this tournament doesn’t take anything away from what I have achieved.
I’m so glad I could share this final season with the team I had, at first I didn’t want to be a captain because I was unsure if I was capable of it (comfort zone) but throughout the season I realized that I was meant to be a captain.
I give everything I have to my friends and family, they are the best support group to ever exist and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. I would have never met these people if it wasn’t for the sport of wrestling and for that I am forever grateful.
Wrestling has taught me so many lesson but every year I learned a specific lesson each time:
6th: Wrestle to win, not to lose
7th: Love the Sport
8th: Everything Happens for a Reason
Freshman: You can overcome injury
Sophomore: Next Best Thing
Junior: Clear your Mind
Senior: Trust in yourself
I will forever be an Ironman and I won’t stop being me, I’m no longer “someone who’s lost and insecure.”
