The neuroscience of tarot: how your practice actually works 🔮✨

Researchers are discovering the measurable mechanisms behind divination practices, and the findings validate what practitioners have experienced for generations.

What the studies found:

🕯️ Your orbitofrontal cortex processes intuitive information in milliseconds, faster than conscious thought (that pull toward certain cards has a neurological signature)

🔮 Tarot functions through projection, the same mechanism clinical psychologists use in therapeutic assessment tools like Rorschach tests

✨ Pattern recognition in random draws activates your right hemisphere's diffuse semantic networks, the same pathways behind creativity, prophecy, and breakthrough insights

🌙 When a card's meaning clicks, your nucleus accumbens floods with dopamine while your hippocampus reorganizes memories. Duke University found that these insights are remembered 2x better than logical analysis

💫 Berkeley research showed ritual actions reduce anxiety responses by 50-100ms, while meditation studies prove focused practice physically thickens your cortex and enlarges your hippocampus

🔮 Therapists now integrate tarot with evidence-based treatments because symbolic interpretation accesses material the logical mind struggles to reach

Your practice works through measurable brain changes: neuroplasticity, dopamine release, altered brain states, and unconscious pattern recognition. The mechanisms are as real as they are fascinating. ✨

Looking for a cozy autumn read-aloud for the evenings? 🍂

The Button Map follows a small, curious mouse who sets out from his village under the old oak to find the great pumpkin from the stories, because winter is coming early and the food won't last. Along the way he meets owls, forest friends and a few frightening moments, and learns that you can feel brave and scared at the very same time.

It's a gentle adventure about courage and big feelings, with 15 short chapters that work well as bedtime reading.

I'm looking for 50 parents (and grandparents, teachers, aunties…) to read it for free. You get the ebook through Booksprout, and in return I ask for an honest review on Amazon. Your own words, whatever you and your little listeners actually thought.

Most histories of witchcraft you'll see online tell the same story: wise women, then the Church, then millions burned, then witches back. 🔮

It's a satisfying story. It's also mostly wrong.

For most of history, "witch" was not a word anyone wanted. It named an enemy. The proud, self-chosen witch of today is a 20th-century creation, and knowing that makes the real history stranger and more useful. ✨

From Babylonian exorcists and Greek curse tablets to the European trials (nowhere near nine million), Murray's rejected witch-cult theory, and Gerald Gardner's Wicca: the full honest sweep is on Substack. 🌙🕯️

If you want history that gets checked before it gets repeated, link in bio. 🖤

🔮 He owns the castle. He holds the whole world in his hand. So why does he look like he's run out of room?

The Two of Wands is a card of success that has started to feel small. ✨ When Waite described it in 1911, he didn't write "planning." He wrote about "the sadness of Alexander" and "mortification." Behind that sits Etteilla's old keyword Chagrin, and the Golden Dawn's Lord of Dominion, Mars in Aries.

🌙 Today we read it as the moment before the move: you've built something solid, and the view keeps reminding you how much more is out there. Careful strategy, or the most elegant form of procrastination?

🕯️ So be honest with yourself: how long have you been standing on that roof?

The full deep dive is on Substack, with the hidden rose-and-lily panel on the wall, Plutarch's real Alexander story, and how to read the card in love, at work and reversed 🖤 Link in bio.

Most of the witches I write about live inside paintings. 🔮✨

Before you can hear what they're saying, you need a few shared tools: how to look slowly, what "period" and "movement" actually mean, and the ways scholars read an image.

This is the starter kit I wish someone had handed me before I started staring at Goya's goats and Baldung's flying hags. Line, colour, light, context… same kind of attention you'd give a tarot card. 🌙🕯️

New on Substack. Link in bio. 🖤

Goetic Demons: Beleth, the Terrible King 👑

Beleth arrives with terrible majesty, preceded by the sound of music, riding upon a pale horse. He commands eighty-five legions and is immensely powerful in matters of love.

This is not a spirit for beginners. He demands great respect and experience from those who call him. But for seasoned practitioners seeking to move mountains in matters of the heart, Beleth holds keys others cannot turn.

Some doors require a king to open them.

Are you ready for love that shakes foundations? 🔥

🔥 Save this post for your Goetia studies.

Oracle card of the week: Death. 💀✨🌙

Death arrives this week and before you panic, remember that Death in oracle and tarot is rarely about physical death. It's about endings that are necessary, transformations that require something to die so something new can be born, the kind of change that doesn't negotiate.

Death is the card that shows up when you've been clinging to what's already dead, when you're trying to reanimate a corpse instead of burying it with dignity, when you're so afraid of endings that you're preventing beginnings. Something in your life is over. A relationship, a job, an identity, a belief, a version of yourself. You might have known it was dying for a while, or it might feel sudden and shocking. But Death is here, and Death doesn't ask permission. It simply takes what's ready to go.

This week, let what's dying die. Don't try to save it. Don't try to resurrect it. Don't try to bargain with the inevitable. Death is not the enemy, it's the gardener pruning what's dead so new growth has space. Grieve if you need to, rage if you must, but ultimately, let go. What's ending was already gone, you're just finally acknowledging it. And here's the secret Death wants you to know: on the other side of every ending is a beginning. You can't be reborn without dying first. The caterpillar doesn't get to stay a caterpillar and become a butterfly. It has to dissolve completely. Trust the process. What's dying needed to die. What's coming will be worth the loss. 🕯️💫
