🚨 Really Cool News Alert 🚨
For those that ask when I’ll have a poetry book out, just a little more patience is needed. I’m overjoyed to announce my full-length poetry manuscript, A Funeral of Strangers Gathered Over a Body of Thought was picked up and will be published by @centavebooks. It’s a book I’ve been working on for the last five years and I can’t wait to bring it to life. A huge thanks to Michelle for believing in this manuscript and giving me such a wonderful opportunity. All good things come to an end. The Mack BBQ existed before I was even born and to hit 50 consecutive years is pretty damn incredible. It was a staple of my childhood to look forward to every year. Epic water balloon fights. Generation vs generation combative volleyball tournaments. The kids becoming adults and having kids of their own. Always an open invite to friends and friends of friends. Someone feel free to correct me if I got the lore wrong but this all started amongst friends/family in the circle my parents were in that knew each other growing up in Mount Vernon as a way to keep themselves and their families connected over the years as they formed adult lives. It’s evolved, changed locations, torch passed from generation to generation, but the love and joy has always been constant. A place where everyone becomes family even if the blood pumping through your veins isn’t all the same. Glad I was able to make the finale this year. Bonus points because it got my mom in town for the weekend. Huge shoutout to @jmack02 for captaining this ship for so much of my life and creating moments none of us will ever forget. One distinct memory that flooded back to me this morning was you showing me, and other younger kids, Robocop 2 when I was much too young after we played Robocop on Nintendo one year and I know for a fact it contributed to my total obsession with movies after I got over being shellshocked by the ED-209 office scene. Trying to be more active since I’ve got things on the horizon to share and thought maybe I reintroduce the creative side of myself. I’m a dude who writes lots of poetry about his dead dad, time, memory, and mortality (the fun stuff), but more recently started diving into self-acceptance, joy, and love as avenues worthy of some words. Have a whole poetry book about it coming early next year. This account used to be nothing but poetry when I first started. Didn’t show my face. Didn’t use my real name. The Everyday Bite was chosen from a long list of handles I wrote up and it’s about how mortality takes a bite out of us each day. It was during the IG boom of posting pictures of your poems and was my first real gateway into sharing what I had in my journals. Lead me to making a bunch of international poet friends who all rock. The internet wasn’t enough. I started showing up to open mics and found a love for spoken word. Which lead to making even more awesome poet friends who pushed me to hone that craft. Been a bit dormant but I love the stage as much as the page. Have been blessed to perform in the coolest of places with the raddest of people. Even get paid for it sometimes. Made a whole spoken word album about my dead dad because I needed something fun to do. But then that lead me to an awesome guitarist who created Subtle Bodies with me and together we make gnarly poetry music about all kinds of stuff like… time, memory, death… and uh… love sometimes. Recently dropped a collab album with some wonderful friends called Umbra and working on another. Got a novel about a dude trapped in a timeless void he has to feed other people’s grief in order to survive. Also centers on time and memory and you guessed it, death. Shit, sensing a bit of a pattern here. The sequel to that bad boy is getting its finishing touches as we speak. Hmm, what else? Just finished making a feature length horror comedy with friends on no budget. I’m sure I’m forgetting something. If I’m not making something I’m at the movie theater or a concert. I think that covers it. Stay tuned for updates on a bunch of the above stuff. #hello #poet
