A proper little tea-room sandwich — soft bread, ripe tomatoes, pesto and a little cheese, cut into neat fingers and served with a generous pile of crisps.

The sort of thing you’d find on a china plate beside a pot of tea, on a rainy afternoon in the countryside. 🫖🍅

There are new little treasures tucked into the Teapot this week.

A shelf of best-selling mysteries for grey afternoons and rainy-day reading. Pretty coffee mugs and tea tumblers for long, leisurely brews. And little paintings made quite literally with coffee, hand-painted and framed in old-fashioned solid wood and glass — the sort of thing you might discover in a curious little shop down a country lane.

Come in for a coffee.
Stay for a browse.
Leave with something you never knew you needed.

Some things are worth holding on to.
Plums are one of them.

They’re here for such a short while — so while they were at their tart, juicy, glorious best, we cooked up two small batches to help you keep a little of that plum season around for longer.

*Tart Plum Jam*

Bright, juicy and wonderfully tart, with just enough sweetness.
Think of a slow morning, warm toast, a generous spoonful of plum jam melting into it. Or a scone with your afternoon tea. Or yoghurt, when breakfast needs a little something extra.
And yes, you could just eat it straight from the jar. We probably would.

*Plum & Chilli Chutney*

Sweet, tangy and gently warm with chilli.
The sort of jar you open when you’ve got cheese and crackers on the table and suddenly realise you need nothing else. Or spread into a sandwich, spooned alongside a roast, or brought out when friends are over and an ordinary evening deserves something a little more interesting.

Both are homemade, preservative-free and made in small batches — because we’d rather make a little of something lovely than a lot of something ordinary.

And we’ve put them in sturdy glass jars with rust-proof lids. Keep the jar, use it in your kitchen, or bring it back to us for a refill.

There are only a limited number of jars this season.

So if you’ve been meaning to take a little bit of The Fat Teapot home with you, this might be the time.

Somewhere between dinner and lunch is our favourite sort of meal.

A proper little plate of sandwiches, a handful of crisps, a cup of strong tea or coffee — and no particular reason to hurry.

We’re starting our new Tea Time Sandwiches with Cucumber & Tzatziki: cool cucumber, creamy tzatziki and soft bread, just the way an afternoon should be.
