I've been filming people who dress up in anachronistic outfits with an anachronistic camera. My Sony HDV takes delicate little cassette tapes; they can store 60 minutes of footage. I think it was built in 2003, when I was fourteen or fifteen.

This new film is starting to feel like it has a shape; even if it's going to be a loose and baggy one. by @thefilminquestion

Each spring, as the days warm and lengthen, Vanessa plants flax seeds in her cottage garden. She also forages for nettles and dyes and buds.

These things she weaves into clothing that hasn't been worn in these islands for thousands of years.

As an archaeologist, she researches the fabrics and fibres recovered from bog bodies excavated from anaerobic environments. It's a way of dressing the past.

Shot on handheld 16mm camera; no light metre, just the violent bright heat of a summer's day. It cooked the exposure, but I suppose these are precisely the friable conditions Bronze Age people would have had to put up with.

It's a short film, screening later this year in Glasgow. I'll share more details when they come. taken in Bronze Age by @thefilminquestion

scenes from the world premiere of Belief Is Not Without Pathos at @thenickelcinema — @tff_festival

I’ll probably reflect more fully on how the night and the festival unfolded elsewhere, but it was a true delight and pleasure to screen this film to a packed room of real human people on a balmy evening in August.

With great thanks to @rjhrjhrjhrjhrjh for moderating the Q&A

It won’t be the final screening of the film; things are in the works. I’ll report more as it comes to light here.

Until then, stay historic. by @thefilminquestion

I'm screening Tetsuya Yamagami next month in Leiden, NL.

It's a short "documentary" about the life and times of Shinzo Abe's assassin—told through the weapon he designed, constructed, and used.

More details are on the way. by @thefilminquestion

Pepys was shot on mini DV cassette (and some camcorder rephotography), which is the first time I've used this format for a project. It has its lumps and bumps. Scary at first to let go of the soft reliability of flashy DSLRs, but the footage has its own depth and texture. My DV is more than 20 years old. I don't know exactly when it was built. It is large and solid and has a zoom like the Hubble telescope. by @thefilminquestion

I've just finished Pepys – a short documentary about the Pepys Estate in Deptford, revisiting a community video project that was undertaken in the area half a century ago in 1974.

There's more to come with this film – ably assisted again by @adambellagha92 taken in Deptford by @thefilminquestion
