The BC MEGA MINNOW Fly is large articulated baitfish pattern made of foam and chain! Available in 7 colors from Rainy’s Flies and can be purchased through fly fishing retailers and shops. Great fly when you need a larger baitfish profile that swims subsurface, and with a slow retrieve it will swim on the surface. by @thefishhawk

We are getting very close to the start of the seasonal striper bite on Lake Lanier. The action can be fast and the top water surface feed can be visually epic! While there are many very capable guides on Lanier, we happen to have 3 local fly shops that have dedicated in-house guides you can book with. These shops are @thefishhawk, @alpharettaoutfitters and @unicoioutfitters. Their guides specialize in this fishery. We also have two independent guides that put more time on the water than all others and also specialize in the striper fishery. You'd be hard pressed to find any better than these five guides. No matter who you choose it's important to try to fish on the best moon dates available. It just adds a chip on your side of the table. These choice dates get booked fast so the earlier you book the better. These five guides are the light tackle & fly fishing Sultans of Lanier...

It’s tarpon time and if you’re chasing silver kings, there’s one fly that stands above the rest as the most famous tarpon fly—Merriman’s Tarpon Toad.
Inspired by Harry Spear’s Bonefish Tasty Toad, Gary invented, developed, and tied the Tarpon Toad in the Florida Keys back in 1993. The Tarpon Toad has become—without question—the most iconic tarpon fly ever created. Decades later, it’s still trusted and still catching Poons.
If you want the full, accurate history of this legendary pattern, check out the Tail Fly Fishing Magazine article published April 17, 2020—straight from the source.
Let’s be clear: there is only ONE Tarpon Toad—Merriman’s Tarpon Toad. While materials and variations may change, the pattern and its origin belong to its creator.
In fly tying, imitation is often seen as a compliment—but claiming someone else’s work as your own? That crosses the line. This craft is built on respect—for the art, for the tradition, and for the tiers who innovate and inspire.
No patents. Just integrity. Respect the fly. Respect the creator.

Wanted to share a cool story going on here in No GA. Carter Cunningham and Landon Glander of Dawson County High School won the Georgia Bass Nation High School Tournament on Lake Eufaula this past week. They are part of the Georgia Bass Nation high school fishing tournament trail. This team also won the Angler Of The Year award which qualifies them for the BASS National Championship on Kentucky Lake in July. Last year they finished fourth at Nationals. They now have 3 tournaments left to finish out their high school career. Both boys intend to go to college and were offered scholarships to attend and fish on college teams. If they go to the same school they will continue fishing in the college tournaments. If not, Carter will positively choose a school that either offered a scholarship or attend a school with a fishing team. The Fish Hawk, Unicoi Outfitters General Store and Henry Cowen are three of their dozen+ main sponsors which help them fund their tournament expenses. We are so proud of these young fishing protégés and wish them well going into the national tournament in the coming weeks. Carters dad is Captain Clay Cunningham who is a full time guide (Catching Not Fishing) on Lake Lanier and captains their boat (as required by tournament rules). It certainly appears the acorn hasn't fallen far from the tree...

When 16‑year‑old Carl DeMagistris (@i_tie_flies_for_people_to_use)—living with his family in a tent on Lake Lanier—fell in love with fly fishing, local anglers stepped in. A donated casting lesson led to a new rod, a vise, and eventually a community‑wide fundraiser that raised $20,000 in under 10 days.

That support bought the family a safe camper, repaired their vehicle, and created an emergency fund for Carl’s future.

North Georgia’s fly‑fishing community changed the trajectory of this family’s life. 👏 👏 👏
