Happy Halloween! Posted @withregram • @1meccanism Excerpt from my horoscopes for this weekend: Not only is it #Scorpio season (aka Spooky Season), it's that time of year when we're called to delve into the shadows and celebrate the power of mystery, seduction, and our inner witch, but this year we've also got an electrifying #FullMoon in #Taurus happening on #Halloween that's sure to deliver the tricks and the treats. The Moon slips into Taurus late Friday afternoon bringing our focus to our comfort and security. My latest for @becauseofthem They'll never take her power!⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ At 21-years-old, Kennedi Carter (@internetbby) has made history as the youngest photographer to shoot a cover for British Vogue in its 104-year history. Carter had the privilege of photographing one of her musical idols, Beyoncé, for the December 2020 cover. The North Carolina native said she was shocked when she got the job.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ "It feels like it dropped out of the sky," Carter told British Vogue. "I'm 21… I haven't really had many opportunities like this."⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Carter is a fine art photographer who describes her work as showcasing "overlooked beauties of the Black experience" and was handpicked by Vogue's editor-in-chief Edward Enninful and Beyoncé, who asked for a woman of color specifically for the shoot. This isn't the first time Queen B has had a hand in a historic Vogue cover; in 2018, she tapped 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell as her photographer. He became the first-ever Black photographer to shoot a Vogue cover in the publication's 126-year history.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Although Carter's aesthetic falls in line with Beyonce's, especially with her recent Black Is King visual album, which uplifted the Blackness across the diaspora, Carter still felt shocked due to her perceived inexperience. She is younger than Irving Penn and David Bailey who's first Vogue covers were 26 and 23, respectively.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ "I thought I wouldn't be able to do something at this level unless I was older, with many years in the game," she told Vogue UK. "This is for people at the pinnacle of their careers."⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The senior African American studies major at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro told British Vogue that she didn't let nerves get to her during the two-day shoot. She said she was going with the flow, having researched how the star worked and was surprised at how much control over the shoot Beyoncé gave her.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ "I had underestimated how much she's willing to submit herself to a vision and truly become someone else's muse," Carter said. My latest for BOTWC! Posted @withregram • @becauseofthem Eight years after his tragic death, Miami-Dade is taking another step to make sure Trayvon Martin's memory remains alive. Last week commissioners unanimously passed a resolution to co-designate the road that leads to his former high school, Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High, as "Trayvon Martin Avenue."⁠ ⁠ Martin's death, which sparked rallies across the country, reignited demands for racial justice and equitable treatment of all people. The resolution, which Commissioner Barbara Jordan sponsored, stated that they are using this tribute to honor his unfinished life.⁠ ⁠ "Trayvon Martin, a young man whose life and future prospects were tragically cut short, was homegrown; and this Board appreciates the social justice reforms spurred by his death, recognizes all that his legacy could have been, and would like to honor the life and memory of Trayvon Benjamin Martin," the resolution said.⁠ ⁠ Although his horrific murder went without justice, his beloved memory lives on as he's inspired others to create necessary change. In 2012, his parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin founded the non-for-profit Trayvon Martin Foundation to advocate against gun violence. Check out my latest piece! Posted @withregram • @becauseofthem Her Name Is Being Etched In History!⁠ ⁠ Mellody Hobson (@mellodyhobson) is a powerhouse. She was born in Chicago, the youngest child of a hardworking single mother, Dorothy Ashley, who instilled confidence, independence, and pragmatism in her daughter.⁠ ⁠ Throughout grade and high school, Hobson worked diligently to get good grades, which attracted top schools across the country, including Harvard, but she decided on Princeton. Today, her alma mater announced they are naming a new residential college after her following a gift from the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation.⁠ ⁠ "No one from my family had graduated from college when I arrived at Princeton from Chicago, and yet even as I looked up at buildings named after the likes of Rockefeller and Forbes, I felt at home," Hobson, who graduated in 1991, said in a statement provided to Because Of Them We Can. "My hope is that my name will remind future generations of students — especially those who are Black and Brown and the 'firsts' in their families — that they too belong. Renaming Wilson College is my very personal way of letting them know that our past does not have to be our future."⁠ ⁠ In June, the Board of Trustees decided to remove Woodrow Wilson's name from the School of Public and International Affairs and Wilson College due to his racist views and policies, saying they were "firmly committed to combatting the scourge of racism in all its forms." The university president, Christopher L. Eisgruber, said in a statement he'd been discussing how transformative the gift would be for Princeton with Hobson for the last year.⁠ ⁠ "It will enable us to improve the student experience at Princeton and to reimagine a central part of our campus, while also recognizing a remarkable woman who is a positive, powerful force for change in the world," Eisgruber said in a statement provided to BOTWC. by @thefivefifthspodcast

Now, they’re expecting triplets! ⁠ ⁠ In an Instagram post announcing their newest additions, the couple explained how shocked they were to learn about the pregnancy.⁠ ⁠ “Last year, my doctors told me that I wouldn’t be able to have kids and would need surgery,” Dee wrote. “But God said otherwise and gave us three healthy babies along with a completely healthy mother!”⁠ ⁠ The duo has experienced a phenomenon that is exceedingly rare: superfetation, or double pregnancy. In this instance, a person has a double uterus, or they can ovulate while already pregnant. Research shows that superfetation may only happen in one out of a few million pregnancies, and there may be fewer than 10 reported cases in medical journals. ⁠ ⁠ “There are cases of women ovulating twice in the same cycle, or women who have ovulated while already pregnant,” Mary Jane Minkin, MD, an ob-gyn at the Yale University School of Medicine told Women’s Health Magazine.⁠ ⁠ Although the new editions were a surprise for the couple, multiple births are on the rise. The birth of twins has increased some 78 percent since 1980, and there are now around 34 sets of twins born per 1,000 births in the United States. Studies estimate that one in 250 pregnancies now results in twins naturally and according to the Center for Disease Control, Black people have a slightly higher likelihood of conceiving twins.⁠ ⁠ The triplets are named Baby A, Baby B, and Baby C for now. Baby A and B are identical twins while Baby C is on their own and six days older than their siblings. Beyoncé puts her money where her mouth is! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🧿 Posted @withregram • @becauseofthem Giving back for her birthday!⁠ ⁠ A few days before her 39th birthday, @beyonce announced via her BeyGood foundation that she is donating $1 million in additional funds to help Black-owned small businesses.⁠ ⁠ In July, the superstar Grammy winner and her foundation partnered with the NAACP to launch the Black Owned Small Business Impact Fund to help those struggling due to the global pandemic. According to the Instagram post announcing the donation, the goal is "to help strengthen small businesses and ensure economic empowerment for Black businesses."⁠ ⁠ Beyoncé has spoken out about the impacts of COVID-19 in the Black community. During her appearance at the virtual concert, One World: Together at Home, she told viewers, "This virus is killing black people at an alarmingly high rate here in America."⁠ ⁠ She continued pointing out that the risk was higher since Black Americans "disproportionately belong to essential parts of the workforce, that do not have the luxury of working from home."⁠ ⁠ "Please protect yourselves," she said. "We are one family, and we need you."⁠ ⁠ Applications for the first round closed in late July. On August 18th, the 20 recipients were announced with grants of $10,000 offered to the businesses. The fun will begin accepting applications for round two later this month. @thatsod.e Nothing is impossible together! @withregram • @becauseofthem Cooperative economics at work!⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ In Toomsboro, Georgia, a group of 19 Black families banned together to create what has the potential to be the next Black Wall Steet.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Black people are resilient, we've had to be to thrive under systems that weren't built for us. This resiliency has created innovative solutions to impossible problems such as racial injustices, food insecurity, and a lack of secure and safe communities. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Ashley Scott, a realtor living in Stonecrest, Georgia, was reaching her breaking point after watching the murder of Ahmaud Arbery in her home state. In a @Blavity op-ed, she wrote that she was distraught, and for the first time in her life, she felt disempowered, which caused her to seek help.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ "I sought counseling from a Black therapist, and it helped. It helped me to realize that what we as Black people are suffering from is racial trauma. We are dealing with systemic racism. We are dealing with deep-rooted issues that will require more than protesting in the streets," Scott wrote. "It will take for us as a people, as Atlanta rapper and activist Killer Mike so eloquently put, "To plot, plan, strategize, organize and mobilize." So that's what I and my good friend Renee Walters, an entrepreneur and investor, did."⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Scott and her good friend Renee Walters spearheaded The Freedom Georgia Initiative @freedomga2020, which recently purchased 96.71 acres of land in Toomsboro, Georgia, to establish a self-sustaining Black community. After attending local zoning and city council meetings, Scott said she realized creating a new city would create change and build "real Black power."⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ "We figured we could try to fix a broken system, or we could start fresh. Start a city that could be a shining example of being the change you want to see. We wanted to be more involved in creating the lives we really want for our Black families," she continued. "And maybe, just maybe, create some generational wealth for ourselves by investing in the land.
