We are growing! The Flaherty Board of Directors is delighted to welcome Merrill Sterritt and Sarah Ema Friedland to the board. Welcome, Merrill and Sarah!

Merrill Sterritt is a Burmese-American field-builder and filmmaker advocate based in Brooklyn. They currently serve as Field of Vision’s Senior Manager of Partnerships & Innovation and as Director of IF/Then Shorts. Previously, as Head of Alliances and Cultural Engagement at Cinereach, Merrill developed meaningful methods of support for regional and community-focused film organizations. In 2010, they co-founded Film Presence, leading theatrical outreach campaigns to connect films with audiences beyond the arthouse bubble. Merrill was named to DOC NYC’s inaugural New Leaders cohort and is a 2022 Rockwood Documentary Leaders Fellow.

Sarah Ema Friedland is filmmaker, artist, and educator. She was the founding Director of the MDOCS Storyteller’s Institute at Skidmore College where she enjoyed supporting both professional and undergraduate non-fiction artists. She is currently the Director of the Liberal Studies Global Media Lab at NYU. Her work is rooted in non-fiction, but often uses the vocabularies of speculative fiction and fantasy to tweak and re-imagine reality. Friedland’s films have screened widely at venues including Lincoln Center, Anthology Film Archives, The DCTV Firehouse Cinema, Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, The Cannes Film Festival Doc Corner Pitch, and PBS. Her works have been supported by grants and fellowships including Jerome, Paul Newman, Ford, NYSCA, the Palestine American Research Center, and the MacDowell Colony. Her recent feature documentary LYD, which she is co-directing with Rami Younis, premiered at the 2023 Amman International Film Festival where it won the Jury Prize for Best Documentary and the FIPRESCI prize from the International Critics Association. Her work has been covered by Variety, The New York Times, Filmmaker Magazine, and The Brooklyn Rail and she has written about film for Millenium Film Journal and Filmmaker Magazine. Friedland is an active member of the Meerkat Media Collective. by @theflaherty

We’re thrilled to come together once again with @theflaherty for a special edition of 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱, celebrating the launch of the 𝘛𝘰 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘦 digital catalogue with a screening and reception at UnionDocs.

Join us for a special screening of 𝘛𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘱𝘢𝘯 (1977), the Isan Film Collective’s landmark docu-drama about the struggles of Northeastern Thai villagers, alongside 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗮𝗸𝗼 𝗬𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗼’𝘀 𝘐 𝘓𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘖𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘸𝘢 𝘚𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘵 (2004), followed by a reception celebrating the catalogue launch.

The 69th Flaherty Film Seminar, 𝘛𝘰 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘦, took place in June 2024 at the Thai Film Archive in Salaya, Thailand. Programmed by 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗷 [ @mayadadol ] and 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝘀 [ @julianross12 ], the seminar explored cinema as a site of gathering, collective imagination, and political possibility, with UnionDocs hosting the seminar’s online experience.

Launching free online on June 7 via the Flaherty website, the 𝘛𝘰 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘦 digital catalogue extends the conversations of the seminar through new contributions by 𝗕𝗶𝗻𝗴, a poem by 𝗭𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘆𝗮 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗮, and an interview with the Thai Film Archive and the Flaherty team conducted by 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗸𝗮 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵. The catalogue also features writings by 𝗡𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗬𝗮𝗵𝗹𝗼𝗺, 𝗖𝗶𝗰𝗶 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗴, 𝗝𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗮, 𝗔𝗻𝘂𝗷 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗿𝗮, 𝗝𝗼𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗲, and 𝗪𝗶𝘄𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘄𝗶𝘄𝗮𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀𝗮, alongside the complete seminar program, film notes, and artist biographies.

We’re delighted to come together with @theflaherty to celebrate a special screening of a newly restored version of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 by 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, a landmark work of anticolonial cinema presented as part of 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱.

Formed in the mid-1970s by students and professors at Cornell University, the Victor Jara Collective traveled to Guyana to “make film, forge cultural alliances, and activate revolution.” What emerged was a poetic and politically urgent meditation on colonialism, resistance, and historical struggle.

Presented in a newly restored version, the screening will be followed by a conversation with Victor Jara Collective member 𝗟𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 and restoration lead 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 [ @bill_brand ], moderated by filmmaker 𝗣𝗮𝗺 𝗬𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 - [ @skylightpix ]and introduced by 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝗮í𝗻𝗮 𝗢𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮 [ @jana_oliveira ].

This screening emerges from Oferenda, a special film program curated by 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘀 and 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝗮í𝗻𝗮 𝗢𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮 for Onward! – the 70th Flaherty Film Seminar. Presented as an offering, the program was rooted in what Janaina describes as “a profoundly Black feeling and practice,” one that draws on Afro-diasporic epistemologies as curatorial tools and thinks from the crossroads, where narrative arguments and disagreements coexist, preferring “and” instead of “or.”
