This is my Mama. Her name is Nasira Parveen. I had the chance to photograph her recently around Mother’s Day. I didn’t plan on posting these then because, honestly, I rarely post anything on time anyway. But when I finally sat down to edit these photos, something suddenly hit me. I realized I never asked for her permission to post them. At first, I brushed off the thought, “She’s mama. Of course she wouldn’t mind.” And then it started bothering me. She’s mama..Maybe that is exactly why I should ask. Why did I instinctively assume her consent was understood, while I would never post a friend, client, or even a stranger without asking first? So I called her and asked if she was okay with me sharing these photos. And you know what she said? “Of course. Why are you even asking?” That response stayed with me longer than I expected. I know that in the kind of society we come from, women of her generation spent so much of their lives rarely being asked what they wanted. Decisions were often made for them so routinely that even their children begin assuming their consent instead of seeking it. Maybe I’m overthinking it. Maybe she never felt any of this at all. But it made me realize how easily we begin taking the women closest to us for granted, especially mothers. Their comfort, their time, their approval, their consent. It becomes so expected that eventually even asking feels unnecessary. And that made me sad. Not because of what she said, but because asking her should have come naturally to me in the first place. Anyway, these are some photos of my mother that I love very dearly. One thing photography has taught me is that kindness is always noticeable.
