Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris)
(Ekorn 🇳🇴)

This Sunday we were on a mission – a mission to photograph some squirrels…

Mission accomplished I would say, do you agree?

@eyefornaturemagic have located a squirrel living just 5-10 minutes’ walk into the local woods where we live – this squirrel, however, is somewhat shy and do not really fancy to pose for the camera (which all in all is a good thing for the squirrel). Hence we decided to take a short trip to an area where the rumours has it that the squirrels are somewhat less shy…

Eurasian nuthatch (Sitta europaea)
(Spettmeis 🇳🇴)

Did you know that Eurasian nuthatch is the only type of bird across Europe that is able to climb down a tree trunk with their head first? And it nests in cavities, like natural tree holes or old woodpecker nests, and if they find the entrance hole to large they reduces the size of the nest hole by plastering the entrance with mud or clay. It uses its beak to apply and shape the material, creating a tighter opening that keeps out predators and larger birds.
