I have been nervous and on edge, since I received notice in mid July that two of my photos had been selected as finalists in the Opy awards. This feeling has now changed to gratitude and happiness when I discovered that I had obtained a second place in “ Fine Art Ocean Photographer of The Year 2023” with this photo named “The Dreamer.” A blue Marlin swimming over a cloud of fish scales dropping into the depths. The light reflecting on the scales made them shimmer making them look like the stars.

Its hard to put into words the emotions that this award makes me feel, without doubt it motivates me to keep seeking those magic moments to capture them.

Thanks to all for the kind messages of support and affection, not just today but through-out these years. A huge congrats to all the winners
And finalists, the level of photography was unprecedented and im proud to have been part of this.

Desde que recibí la noticia a mediados de Julio que dos de mis fotografías presentadas eran finalistas de Opy awards, los nervios y el agradecimiento constante estaban a flor de piel.

Feliz por haber obtenido un segundo puesto como Fine Art Ocean Photographer of the Year 2023 con la fotografía “The Dreamer” - un marlin azul nadando bajo un manto de escamas desvaneciéndose hacia las profundidades, mientras le reflejan la luz de la superficie, como si de un manto de estrellas se tratase.

Se mezclan un conjunto de emociones difíciles de expresar, es una gran motivación para seguir investigando, nutriéndome y creando.

Muchísimas gracias a todos los que llevan mostrando apoyo y cariño cada día y sobre todo grandísima enhorabuena al resto de ganadores, sin duda han mostrado un nivel de fotografía increíble digno de ver.

National Geografic España ( @natgeoespana ) lanza “OTRO PLANETA ES POSIBLE” , una serie de episodios sobre historias y proyectos inspiradores que nos muestran otras formas de convivir con el planeta para proteger el medio ambiente.

No tengo palabras para agradecer el haber podido tener la oportunidad de formar parte de uno de ellos y así intentar inspirar a muchas más personas, espero de corazón que os guste. PODÉIS ENCONTRAR EL ENLCE CON EL EPISODIO COMPLETO EN MI BIOGRAFÍA.

We were almost ready to head back.

The wind had picked up, the surface was covered in white water, and after hours at sea it felt like the day was coming to an end.

Then we heard a report on the radio.

A female whale shark had been seen somewhere in the area.

So we stayed alert.

Not long after, between the foam, a large shadow appeared moving just below the surface.

We had a couple of opportunities to enter the water with her. Each time, we stayed suspended and waited, trying to read her movement without interfering with it.

She passed calmly, holding a steady course through the water.

What makes encounters like this even more fascinating is how little we still know about female whale sharks. To this day, only one pregnant female has ever been scientifically documented, carrying more than 300 embryos.

A few moments, a few photographs, and then she disappeared back into the blue.

Grateful for encounters like this, and even more for being able to share them with the right people.

Mucho antes de fotografiar grandes olas o viajar en busca de ellas, pasaba horas en el Mediterráneo fotografiando olas vacías.

Observar cómo rompían, intentar entender por qué cada una lo hacía de una manera diferente, anticiparme a lo que iba a suceder y aprender a encuadrar algo que desaparece en cuestión de segundos.

Creo que gran parte de lo que hoy entiendo del agua empezó ahí.

Hay algo adictivo en saber que nunca volverás a ver exactamente la misma ola. Cada una tiene su propio recorrido, su propia forma y un instante que dura apenas un segundo.

Y quizá por eso sigo fotografiándolas.

Y así fue, nos pilló en familia, disfrutando, aunque los nervios de que algo especial iba a suceder no se podían esconder, decidí no planificar mucho y dejar que el momento me “deslumbrase” dejando ese punto de inspiración en el mismo momento del fenómeno. Durante el eclipse total, una nube lo cubrió todo… pensando, lo que podía haber sido y no fue, aún así, el momento de oscuridad transmitió una energía especial. Dejamos fluir esa magia y la naturaleza nos regaló el final más bonito del año.

Before taking this image, I spent time watching how this manta was moving.

Its direction, its rhythm, the distance it kept, and the way it reacted to our presence.

Once I understood its trajectory, I positioned myself below with enough distance to avoid interfering with its movement.

From there, the light did the rest.

The surface became a soft backlight, revealing only the shape of the animal moving above me.

There is a moment during summer evenings when the sea changes completely.

Even if you do not spend the whole year in the water, you can feel it.

The light gets lower, the water turns gold, and everything seems to slow down for a few minutes.

It does not last long.

Sometimes you are still wet, tired, with salt on your face, not really thinking about much.

And then the light hits the surface in a certain way.

For a few seconds, you stop looking for photographs and simply stay there.

Watching the day disappear over the water, with a small smile.
