Back in 1993, I signed my first and only publishing deal with Warner Chappell through their joint venture with Paisley Park Records. They flew me out to Minneapolis to meet Prince and record some tracks with his in-studio musicians in his Paisley Park studio. Being in my twenties, I obviously knew Prince’s songs, but I didn’t truly grasp how talented he was. Over the years, my appreciation for him has only grown—from the production detail he put into every track and the endless instruments he played, to his legendary studio work ethic and his fight to make sure artists knew to “own our masters.” Today, 33 years later, I finally returned. I walked away learning so much more about the man behind the production, writing, and performances, which continues to help inspire what we produce today. If you love and appreciate music, you need to come here and experience it for yourself. You’ll be blown away.
