I came for Les Bleus. 🇫🇷

I stayed for everything else.

For a month, football became the world’s common language.

I found myself watching people almost as much as I watched the matches—friends embracing strangers, entire cities moving to the rhythm of a whistle, a kick of a ball, and the roar of a stadium. It was remarkable how quickly joy could ripple through thousands of people at once.

What felt like the world’s happiest month—and, for a while, America’s too.

One of my favorite parts was watching so many Americans experience the World Cup for the first time. Alongside the football came conversations, traditions, songs, food, flags, and cultures from every corner of the globe. It was a reminder that sport has a rare ability to make a very large world feel surprisingly small.

The stadiums were awe-inspiring—Dallas especially—and the tournament itself was exceptionally well produced.

I’ll remember the goals.

But I’ll remember the people even more.

The road to this World Cup didn’t begin this summer.

It began four years ago watching Kylian Mbappé play the game at a different speed. That curiosity eventually took me to Paris this spring—to a PSG match, yes, but also to something much bigger.

In France, football isn’t just ninety minutes. It’s woven into cafés, conversations, neighborhoods and the rhythm of the city itself. You feel it before kickoff, long after the final whistle, and everywhere in between.

The football brought me there.

France made me want to come back.

My pick for the World Cup? Les Bleus.

As a transplant from a football nation, one of the unexpected joys of 2026 has been watching the rest of the world discover America. But even more rewarding has been watching America discover football.

The energy. The atmosphere. The patriotism. The camaraderie between supporters. The shared experience of cheering for a country, a city, and a dream.
