One thing we see all the time is orders with files that are too small for the desired print size.

The file may look great on your phone or computer screen, but it will print out fuzzy and pixelated.

You can avoid this by knowing what print size your files can handle →

Start by checking your file’s pixel dimensions.

On an iPhone, you can hit the “i” info button underneath the photo. You can also find this in the file info in Photoshop, Mac Preview, etc. →

You can then use this chart with some standard pixel dimensions to get a rough idea of what print size your files can handle, based on a 300 PPI resolution benchmark for high-quality prints.

If your print will be displayed and enjoyed at a distance, you can stretch your files a bit further, because the added viewing distance helps “hide” some of the softness.

Should you print borderless or with a border? If you sell prints, this decision matters.

Borderless (full bleed) is the easy sell. Your collectors can grab a ready-made frame and they’re done. No custom cutting, no extra costs, no waiting around. The downside: with no extra paper around the image, there’s nothing to grub if they ever want to frame it with a mat. Positioning has to be exact and that can get tricky. It also means when handling you have to touch the image directly, increasing the chance of scuffs and fingerprints.

Bordered prints - a standard for a lot of gallery prints - solve that. The extra paper around the image gives more flexibility to collectors for framing styles down the road and the print can be handled safely.

Neither is necessarily “better”. It just depends what you’re optimizing for based on what you think your collectors will value.

Working on some beautiful prints for pressed flower artist, Sara Wetmore @studiofreshpress.

You can see the depth of the pressed flowers and the texture of the watercolour paper gives it such a lovely finish.

Printed on Epson Cold Press Bright fine art paper.

Every print that comes off our roll gets cut by hand - one at a time, before it’s packed and shipped. It gives us more control over every edge, keeps borders clean and consistent, and means every print gets a final look before it leaves the studio. A little slower maybe, but we think it’s worth it.
