I keep most of our medical news on Facebook, but here’s an abbreviated update in case we’re not connected there: Andrew’s quarterly scans in early July showed a progression of his cancer. It’s too soon for another surgery, so his doctors recommended immunotherapy. In a best case scenario, this would be effective in training Andrew’s immune system to fight the cancer, and he wouldn’t have to deal with all the shittiness that chemo brings. There is about a 50% chance of this being effective, but unlike with chemo, the results don’t present themselves as quickly. On the other hand, there are potentially very scary side effects if your immune system begins attacking your lungs or colon, which can lead to death in rare cases. We head to Mayo Clinic tomorrow for round 1 of 4 (assuming no serious side effects).

At the same time, Andrew is laying the groundwork with NIH to set up for a CAR T-Cell Therapy clinical trial, where they will extract some of his blood to grow new cells, which takes about three months - so if immunotherapy is not effective, the T-cells will be ready. While the science is cool, we hope we don’t have to pursue this because 1. The clinical trial is in phase 1 where they are still determining a safe dose, 2. The list of side effects is long and scary, and 3. It would require Andrew to be at NIH / in Maryland for 7 weeks.

So in a nutshell, that’s the update. We’re both trying to remain positive - but this feels incredibly daunting and defeating. Andrew loved receiving cards of encouragement in the mail last year - our address is 1030 Alger St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49507 if you want to send him one. And inspired by another friend going through cancer treatment right now (and after all it is his birthday month), he’d cherish and appreciate the gift of a vinyl record if you want to send him one.
