— Fun fact: I once went on a date with a guy (who was not of color) to a Vietnamese restaurant. He took one whiff of the bottle of fish sauce at the table, made a face, and then gave it to the waitress saying, “I don’t like whatever this is, can you just get it out of here?” 🙃🙃🙃

Anyways my love for fish sauce runs real deep and that may or may have been the reason things didn’t work out with him 🤷🏽‍♀️

— Bahala ka sa buhay mo basically translates to, “You’re in charge of your life.”

ONCE A SARDINE GIRL, ALWAYS A SARDINE GIRL
— Happy Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander Heritage Month from this Filipino illustrator/designer ☀️🇵🇭

Growing up, my parents and all my titas and uncles owned a lil Filipino store in California (and still do!) and that meant me and my cousins got to eat a bunch of yummy snacks and lots of canned corned beef, spam, cuttlefish, and my favorite: sardinas over a bowl of rice 🐟🍚

OPEN THE EYES OF MY HEART — a visual prayer for faith, hope, + wisdom

I honestly tried really hard to include lettering or some kind of type in this, especially because the idea came from ol’ classic “Open the Eyes of My Heart Song” from the 90s 🫀👁️

But after many tries it just didn’t work out so I had to pivot and find other ways to make it more interesting. So shout out to @procreate and their ✨animation assist ✨ because I don’t think I could have done this without them.

sometimes the sketch doesn’t always reflect the final design and honestly it takes a couple days and even tries to figure out where things are meant to go, but nonetheless grateful for the creative process 🍓🍊🍋

Lots of sketching, erasing, writing, rewriting, deleting, and deep introspection just to get here. Spent a lot of time asking myself, “is this genuinely me or is this just what feels safe and looks good?” “Is it okay for me to show up authentically as myself?” “Is this just going to look like everybody else?”

Honest to God, it took almost a whole year to figure myself out and the person that I want to be, but I’m real proud of the identity of Good Fruit Creative Co. and I hope you guys are too.
