2021 Stanford study shows link between microbial diversity and inflammation 👀🦠 by @thegoodgutdoc

Low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) could be contributing to more than just digestive discomfort. 👀

Stomach acid plays a critical role in breaking down proteins, releasing nutrients from food, and protecting against harmful microorganisms.

When stomach acid is too low, potential consequences include:

🦠 **SIBO** – Reduced protection against bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.

🥩 **Maldigestion** – Impaired protein digestion, potentially contributing to bloating, gas, and fullness.

💊 **Malabsorption** – Increased risk of deficiencies in nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, calcium, and magnesium.

🔥 **Reflux-like symptoms** – Low stomach acid may coexist with reflux, although most acid reflux is not caused by insufficient acid.

🦠 **Increased susceptibility to GI infections** – Less stomach acid means a weaker barrier against ingested pathogens.

The takeaway? Stomach acid isn’t the enemy. We NEED adequate stomach acid for optimal digestion and nutrient absorption!

Keep in mind that these symptoms aren’t specific to low stomach acid, so proper evaluation matters before supplementing with HCl.

I’m seeing more iodine deficiency in my practice lately, and your salt choice could be playing a role! 🧂

Iodine is ESSENTIAL for thyroid hormone production, yet many people aren’t getting enough through their diet. Most sea salts, Himalayan pink salts, and specialty salts aren’t iodized, meaning you could be missing out on this important mineral—especially if you rarely eat seafood, dairy, or eggs.

Your thyroid needs iodine, but balance is key! Too much can be just as problematic as too little.
