Inspired by his newly released novel The Letters I Never Sent, the live show blends personal storytelling, humor, and audience conversation. The piece treats participation as a sensory event and challenges the audience to question their own hearing. “ - Jette Büchsenschütz, Berlin Microphone Controller Where gesture becomes music and listening becomes physical—Microphone Controller reimagines the rock concert for Deaf and hearing audiences through choreography, embodiment and language. In this 55 minute work, voice is displaced from sound and thrown into the body. Rooted in CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) identity, the work draws on cultural immersion, responsibility, and translation between worlds. Refracted through the mythology of fame—this work asks what the power of voice costs, and who pays the price. As spectacle fractures into intimacy, Microphone Controller reveals a performer navigating pressure, expectation, and the unstable terrain between communication and expression. From our Independent Presenters | @springboardyyc Tradition takes flight in BIRDY, a visually striking contemporary dance work from Taiwan’s acclaimed HUNG DANCE, coming to The GRAND this November, presented by Springboard Performance. Drawing on the imagery of traditional Chinese opera, BIRDY transforms elaborate pheasant feather headpieces into mesmerising extensions of the body, blurring the boundaries between tradition and modernity, freedom and constraint. Set to an eclectic score of electronic and Chinese classical music, this is dance that challenges expectations and invites us to see familiar symbols in entirely new ways. Described by Stir as “polished and visually stunning”, BIRDY has captivated audiences at festivals around the world. Now, Calgary audiences have the opportunity to experience it live on stage at The GRAND. Today’s your last chance to have your say and enter to win a full day’s rental of The GRAND’s Studio, valued at $600. We’re working with Allied, owner of the historic Lougheed Building, to explore how the flexible L-Block spaces beside The GRAND could better serve Calgary’s creative community. That means hearing directly from the people who might use them: artists, arts organisations, teachers, performers, creatives and community groups. What kind of space do you need? What makes a venue accessible, affordable and genuinely useful? Your answers will help inform what these spaces could become.
