In honor of Bruce Springsteen’s 77th birthday, what a gift he has been to so many of us, I’d like to talk about the impact he had, and has, on our father, and our family. Some of my earliest musical memories that don’t involve my father’s music, involve Bruce’s. My father had Born in the USA in his suburban, and that song’s snare part quite literally changed my life.

My father first saw Bruce on the Born in the USA tour in Miami, he recalled to me many times that it was one of the most pivotal moments of his life. He had already been playing music, but had not yet fronted a band, he had just began writing songs. He knew he wanted more out of music, and knew he could offer more, but it was seeing Bruce and experiencing that show, that pushed him to branch out and begin thinking of more. He began writing the songs, and forming, what would become the Mavericks not long after.

The Mavericks have covered Bruce songs a few times now, with “All That Heaven Will Allow” appearing on What a Crying Shame, and “Hungry Heart” appearing on 2019’s Play the Hits. He also did a fantastic version of “Downbound Train,” buts that a story for another time.

In November of 2009, my father had to be on the road for my brother Victor and I’s birthday, we were born on the same day, a year apart, another story for another time lol. Jay Z was playing in Nashville that weekend and I was begging him to go. To call a favor and get us in, etc. typical nepo baby stuff. He considered it but ultimately said no because he was not going to be with us. To say I was disappointed, would be an understatement.

However, he maintained that he had something big planned for us when he got back. I was sullen and petulant and could not have cared less. My dad wasn’t in town and I didn’t get to see one of my favorite artists. In my mind, at the time, I wasn’t getting what I wanted for my birthday. The day he got back in town, he picked my brothers and I up from school early, and asked if we wanted to go see Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band that night. Whatever ridiculous feelings I had, vanished immediately. He didn’t need an answer, he knew. We were beyond excited. I had never seen him so ex by @thegreatbamdino

6 years ago, today, began what my dad and I, and a few others might call a “perfect” week. There were some shows out west, so he and I decided to take the Harley’s. We had spoken for years about doing a bike trip together, and now it had finally come together. We were so excited. Every day, I have more gratitude than I have grief for the man that was, is, my father. While many of you are aware of the connection we have musically, we are so bonded everywhere else. Our hobbies are the same, we have the same interest and passion for Motorsports; we love Ferrari and Formula 1, Motogp and Ducati’s, and we love Harley’s and NASCAR. We love Michelin starred omakase’s and good whiskey and wine, and we love the pollo al carbon on Nolensville. We love the blues, and country music, but we also love the Skatalites, Ornella Vanoni and Grace Jones and Robert Palmer and Snoop Dogg.

Who needs gear?

We had a show that night with Los Lobos in Albuquerque, so we decided to ride to Santa Fe.

After the last show, we were sitting on the bus in Dallas, smoking and listening, when he looked at me and said “Want to stay another day and ride back?” And I of course said yes.

We spent the next day just hanging in Dallas at the hotel with some friends, Lisa and Clay we love yall. And then took off early the next day for Nashville. The first day we rode 500 miles, on backroads for about 450 of them. The last 50 or so we had to do on I-40. Which was awful, until the traffic cleared and we had the whole interstate to ourselves as we approached Memphis.

This was the best beer and shot of tequila I have ever had in my life. We got to the hotel, put our bags in our rooms, which were right across the hall from each other, and went to the hotel bar immediately. We were going to go to Earnestine and Hazels, but after that round, we just kept bullshitting and before we knew it, an hour had gone by. We said fuck i by @thegreatbamdino

The Malo Family is honored to continue Raul’s legacy. Nothing heals quite like music, and nobody did it better than Raul. He gave his whole heart to every lyric, every stage, and every soul lucky enough to hear him sing. His voice brought comfort and joy to so many, and that gift will live on forever.

Over the last five months, our family has walked through some of the hardest and darkest days of our lives. The loss, the heartbreak, and the quiet moments without Raul have been incredibly painful. But through it all, we have stayed strong because that is what Malos do.

Much of that strength has come from all of you. The prayers, messages, memories and love from around the world have carried us more than you will ever know. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for continuing to honor Raul the way you have. He loved his fans deeply, and knowing how much his music meant to so many people has brought comfort to our family during this difficult time.

Raul’s commitment to music was unwavering, even through life’s hardest moments. He blessed us with a vast archive of material that he hoped to share with the world. To honor his wishes, we will be announcing plans for future projects in celebration of his enduring spirit in the months ahead. Official information will always be shared here first.
