I recently saw this sign that reads « a burial ground is also a nursery » on a bike ride out to Ocean Beach and was struck by both the heaviness and hope in this statement.

2020’s been a lot. Here’s to a 2021 where hopefully we can take the pain and lessons of this year and use them to create a better world. Sign that says « a burial ground is also a nursery » in front of the océan. by @thegreatoutchea

Today’s little urban hike was focused on finding this rock in Bernal Heights Park in San Francisco. It’s regularly painted with messages depending on the season or zeitgeist. Most recently it was painted gold and black with the simple statement and fact that Black Lives Matter.
Now, it’s painted to center the lives of Black Trans people. It’s imperative that if you believe that Black Lives Matter you know that statements has to be inclusive of each and every Black life or it means nothing.
Period.
I’m absolutely sick of learning new names of people who have been murdered, but until we’ve created a society where that’s no longer necessary, let’s lift up, remember and fight for Tony McDade, Riah Milton, Dominique “Rem’Mie” Fells, Nina Pop, Brayla Stone, and too many others. If you have favorite organizations that support Black and other POC LGTBQ2S people, please share in the comments.

I created this little piece of art in celebration of and in gratitude for Christian Cooper being alive to bird watch or whatever else he wants.
I hope that those who are struggling for freedom through protests, opening their pockets, organizing, education or more found moments of joy this past weekend and that you’re taking good care of yourself and your people. This image brought me back to a place of hope and determination this morning. Her sweatshirt reads « Build Black Futures ». On Twitter, @mf_greatest asked a perfect question: « How are you materially contributing to the health, wealth, safety and advancement of Black people?

That is the question. That is the work. »

If you’re a non-Black ally (ally is a verb): Save your black square and instead amplify (and cite!) the voices of people doing the work. If you are in a position to contribute financially. Do it. Use the power of the internet to figure out how to do contribute something productive other than the social media equivalent of thoughts and prayers.
If you’re Black, I sincerely hope you do something that edifies and enriches you and that you find a moment of peace, and maybe even some joy. by @thegreatoutchea

Thanks to @ohhappydani for creating such a perfect, precise image for what so many people are feeling.

In the Before Times, when I didn’t side eye anyone coming too close to me, I enjoyed running outdoors and experiencing and noticing nature.
But 55 days into sheltering-in-place, navigating experiencing fresh air the way I want to has been an ordeal and less of a relief.
A few weeks ago (what is time?) I started writing a blog post ruminating on what should we do when being in nature isn’t calming, when it doesn’t ease your anxiety.
Today those questions are overshadowed once again by the death of an unarmed, young Black person named Ahmaud Arbery who was simply jogging.

May his memory be a blessing and may his family find justice and peace. by @thegreatoutchea

Sheltering in Place.
Social Distance.
Quarantine.

All of these concepts have forced me to reckon, yet again, with how blessed and privileged I’ve been to travel in the past. This photo is from 2017 near Banff.
Grateful for wise state and local leaders and the medical professionals doing their part to repair the world at such a wild time. I can’t wait until it’s safe to roam again, but until that time I’ll be noticing the nearby nature around me, reliving trips on my phone, and hoping for better days soon. Hope you and yours are safe, well and doing your part to protect yourselves and your community by staying at home, if you’re privileged enough to be able to do so. by @thegreatoutchea

By the end of 2019, ya girl was épuisée, exhausted. I lost many months feeling bad about why I didn’t have the energy to do the things I claim to love doing and was fortunate to have the resources to get a way on a solo trip for my birthday. January feels like a lifetime ago, but I’m so so thankful I had those moments of peace as a reservoir for such a time as this. I hope you are being prudent and kind to yourself and your community. Enjoy the outdoors to the extent that you can (at least 6 feet away from others) and that it’s safe to do so. ❤️ by @thegreatoutchea

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth, beautiful people!
Throwing it back to my trip to Yosemite, Southern Sierra Miwok land, where I got to meet Ranger Shelton Johnson, author of « Gloryland » , a story about a Buffalo Soldier’s connection to Yosemite. We missed Johnson’s live interpretation of Buffalo Soldiers’ lives, but that’s just another reason to visit again!

Johnson has worked for the National Parks Service for more than 30 years and in 2009 he was featured in the Ken Burns’ documentary, « The National Parks: America’s Best Idea ». Have any of you had the opportunity to meet him? taken in Yosemite National Park by @thegreatoutchea

Have you visited Colombia? 🇨🇴 Last month I got to visit Cartagena and made a day trip out to the first free town for Africans in the Americas- San Basilio de Palenque. Our group visited the river that helped sustained the lives of the villagers who fought for and won their freedom. It was a privilege learning about this important piece of Afro Latinx history and experiencing the culture as guests of @kombilesami.
