Your design business is growing. But are the numbers giving you the clarity to grow it well?

Hi, I’m Dee, and I work specifically with interior designers on the financial side of their businesses.

Because as a design business grows, the finances get more complicated too.

Multiple projects running at once.
Client deposits and vendor payments.
Procurement.
Project profitability.
Cash moving in and out, without always knowing what’s actually yours to spend.

And at some point, simply keeping the books up to date isn’t enough.

You need to understand what the numbers are telling you about your business.

That’s where I come in.

I bring decades of finance and accounting experience to the interior design industry, combining bookkeeping with financial oversight so you have better visibility into what’s working, what isn’t, and where your money is going.

Because better numbers aren’t really the end goal.

Better decisions are.

If you’re building a design business and want more clarity around the financial side of it, you’re in the right place.

Finance for Interior Designers.
Better Questions. Better Clarity. Better Decisions

Design revenue can look healthy while margins quietly thin.

More projects.
More invoices.
More money moving through the business.

But without visibility into what each project is actually producing, growth can feel heavier than it should.

As your design business grows, it’s no longer just about generating more work.

It’s about understanding what that work is actually producing.

Which projects are profitable?
Where are margins being squeezed?
And is the growth you’re seeing actually creating more financial stability?

Because strong revenue doesn’t automatically mean strong profit or strong cash flow.

This is where financial clarity matters.

When you understand what’s happening behind the revenue, you can make better decisions about pricing, projects and growth.

Better Questions. Better Clarity. Better Decisions.

👋🏽 Hi, I’m Dee! 🌟

If we haven’t met yet, here are a few things you might not know about the person behind The Green Book Solution.

I spent more than 20 years working in finance and accounting before building a business of my own.

Today, I bring that experience into a world I’ve really come to appreciate: interior design.

I work with interior designers who are building beautiful businesses, but want to feel just as confident about the financial side as they do about the creative side.

Outside of work, I’m a mom of two, I love travelling, music and concerts, and I’m always happiest spending time with the people I love.

I also believe building a successful business should give you more choices in your life, not simply give you more work to do.

That belief is a big part of why I do what I do.

So yes, you’ll find plenty of conversations about numbers around here. Profitability, cash flow, pricing, bookkeeping and the questions worth asking as your design business grows.

But you’ll also get to know the person behind them. 😊

If you’re an interior designer, I’d love to know a little about you too. What made you decide to start your own design business?

Having your bookkeeping taken care of is important. But knowing what those numbers mean for your business? That’s where things get interesting.

I love helping interior designers go beyond organized books to better understand their finances, ask the right questions, and feel more confident making business decisions.

Because it’s not just about knowing your numbers. It’s about knowing what to do with them.

Not sure what your numbers are telling you about your design business? Let’s talk about it!

Good bookkeeping matters. But understanding the business behind the numbers matters just as much.

When I work with interior designers, I want to understand how their studios operate, what's working well, and where things could run a little more smoothly.

Because the right financial support isn't necessarily the same for every design business.

And sometimes, a good conversation is where the most valuable insights begin.

Wondering what the right support could look like for your design business?

One decision in your interior design business can have a ripple effect you don't immediately see.

A change in a project timeline can affect when suppliers need to be paid. A purchasing decision can influence cash flow. Bringing on additional help can affect what a project ultimately earns.

Each decision may make sense on its own. But understanding how those decisions connect financially gives you a clearer picture of what's happening across your business.

And that's something I pay close attention to when working with interior designers.

Because understanding the numbers is important. Understanding how they connect to the business you're running is where they become truly useful.

When I review the finances of an interior design business, accurate bookkeeping matters. But it’s not where my questions end.

I’m also looking at what’s happening behind the numbers.

Are project costs being recovered? Is purchasing putting pressure on cash? Are certain projects requiring more time or resources than expected? Are project margins holding up as the work progresses? Is overhead growing faster than the business?

Those are the kinds of questions that can help an interior designer understand not just what happened, but what may need attention next.

Because sometimes the most useful thing the numbers can do is point us toward a better question.

Better Questions. Better Clarity. Better Decisions.

When you’re running an interior design business, there’s a lot happening behind the client work.
Design fees, client deposits, procurement, purchasing, freight, trades and project costs can all be moving through the business, often across several projects at once.
Your bookkeeping should help you keep track of all of that without becoming another thing you have to manage.
It should reflect how your business actually operates and help you see what needs your attention.
Because good bookkeeping should make the financial side of your interior design business easier to manage, not harder.

There’s no shortage of numbers behind an interior design business.

Design fees, procurement, project costs, overhead, margins... you could spend a lot of time looking at all of these numbers.

But more information doesn’t necessarily give you more clarity.

The useful part is knowing what deserves your attention right now.
What changed?
What needs a closer look?
What could affect the next decision you make?

Good financial support should help you see that more clearly.

As Q3 comes to a close, it’s a good time to look back at the projects your studio has worked on this year.

Not just at the revenue they brought in, but at how they actually worked for the business.

Which stayed reasonably close to scope? Which recovered their costs well? Which required more time than expected? Which left the studio with a healthy return for the work involved?

Those patterns can tell you something useful as you think about the work you want to take on next.

Sometimes, your past projects can help shape what comes next.

A project can start with a solid profit in mind and still finish differently.

Extra design time, additional sourcing, unrecovered costs and unbilled scope can seem small as they happen. But over the life of a project, they add up.

That’s why project profitability is worth watching while the work is happening, not just once the project is finished.

There’s always something exciting about a new project inquiry.

But before the proposal goes out, there’s another question worth asking:

What does this project need to look like financially to make sense for the studio?

Not just the design fee. Consider the time the scope will require, procurement and coordination, costs that need to be recovered, and payment terms that support the work along the way.

These are much easier decisions to make before the project begins than after the numbers aren’t working as expected.

Good business starts before the client says yes.
