hip-hop journalism changed everything, and this sunday we’re talking about how.  i’m excited to be back in the windy city this weekend (june 6+7) for the american writers festival, and i’m even more excited to join @syreetagates, @karengoodmarable, and @waldens_block for the “word is bond: hip-hop journalism” panel to talk about the publications that changed the game!

7 years ago we started the gumbo! a place built on hip-hop, conversation, and community, with a commitment to putting Black women at the forefront always, in all ways. from highlighting the rappers you knew everything about to championing the foremothers who didn’t always get their just due, we’ve been telling our stories and archiving our history. we couldn’t have done it without all of you. we’re grateful for the journey so far and excited for what’s next! by @thegumbo

we are heartbroken by the loss of angie stone, a true pioneer in hip-hop with the sequence and a soulful voice that touched so many. her legacy will forever inspire. we’re sending so much love to her family, friends, and loved ones. by @thegumbo

quick story! @saragilanchi and i met when i was working at the late show, where i learned that in addition to her tremendous research and production skills she was also an amazing artist. seriously, i was so blown away by her skills that i asked her to draw social graphics for us on more than one occasion 😭

when it was time to drop some merchandise for @thegumbo she was the first person i called! if you didn’t know, sara has drawn ALL of artwork on the merch highlighting rappers and films over the years. and once it was confirmed that the book was actually going to be a real, tangible thing, i knew i needed sara’s illustrations in it! i feel like she can draw anything and she does it so quickly it’s insane. for example, i sent her the reference for the mc lyte chapter and i swear she sent the drawn image back to me in like 10 minutes 😭

beyond her talent, sara is such a kind, genuine and witty woman. i truly feel so honored to have her images in my debut book. if you haven’t gotten your copy yet you can get it wherever books are sold! and if you ever need an illustrator, add sara to your rolodex of people to call! thank you so much sara for everything ✨🤎 by @thegumbo
