Your kid wants juice. You want less sugar.🧃 The 50/50 pour: half apple juice, half water, all the yes. Half the sugar, still 100% kid-approved.💧 #Hydration #SportsMom #YouthSports #GutHealth #TheGutPerformanceMD by @thegutperformancemd
🚨BACK TO SCHOOL WATER BOTTLE RULES! 🚨 Before you finish your school shopping, make sure your child’s water bottle actually meets school guidelines! While rules vary across the US, most public elementary schools follow these general guidelines: 1️⃣ Clear Plastic Only: Many schools ban opaque metal cups so they can easily verify the contents. 2️⃣ Plain Water Only: Keep the juices and sports drinks at home to prevent classroom messes (and protect those teeth!). 3️⃣ Spill-Proof & Labeled: A secure lid saves school technology, and a clear name label saves you a trip to the lost-and-found! 🩺 The MD Perspective: Staying hydrated with plain water is crucial for your child’s gut health! It keeps their digestive system running smoothly, prevents sluggishness, and boosts brainpower for a successful school day. 💡Check your local school district website for their exact handbook rules! 👇 What kind of water bottle did your kid pick out this year? Your teen’s water bottle has an ingredient list now. 😳 Electrolytes. Creatine. Collagen. Caffeine. It’s called stacked water — and in this week’s episode I read that tumbler the way I’d read a label in clinic, one layer at a time: what’s fine, what’s unnecessary, and the layer I’d pull first. 🎧 The full breakdown is in this week’s episode — link in bio to listen. They’re making electrolyte drinks for kids now. 👀 Fast Company reports the $64 billion functional drink industry has found its next target: children. Capri Sun Hydrate. Gerberlyte. Kool-Aid Hydration. Nearly half of parents say they’re actively looking for electrolytes for their 6 to 12-year-olds. Here’s what the science says: our kids don’t have an electrolyte deficiency. They have a water habit that hasn’t been built yet.💧 Electrolytes have their place — a stomach bug, long hard exercise, serious heat. But for a regular school day? Water still wins. 🎧 The full breakdown is coming on The Gut Performance MD podcast — follow along so you don’t miss it. 10 calls I’d make first 💧 I’m a pediatric gastroenterologist, and these are the judgment calls behind everything I post: ↗️ I’d never trust the word “electrolytes” without flipping the bottle over. ↗️I’d check hydration before I blamed a meltdown on behavior. ↗️And “it’s just juice” gets my attention immediately. Most kids don’t run out of energy first — they run out of water. Which one have you heard yourself say? I don’t think parents realize this: kids rarely announce dehydration — it shows up disguised.💧 The signs parents most often misread: • A headache that gets called “tired” • A meltdown that gets called “behavior” • Achy legs that get called “growing pains” • Dark yellow urine, or not peeing for hours • Dry mouth, unusual sleepiness after play What helps: water first for everyday play and practices under an hour. Reach for electrolytes when it’s prolonged or heavy sweating, or with vomiting/diarrhea — and start hydrating before the game, not at halftime. Get checked promptly for: no urine for 8+ hours, hard to wake, dizziness, sunken eyes, or crying without tears. We walk through dehydration warning signs in depth on the podcast — link in bio. 🎧 Education only — please check with your own healthcare provider. #TheGutPerformanceMD #KidsHydration #Dehydration #YouthSports #ParentingTips by @thegutperformancemd
A haunted house, but it’s hydration myths 👻 The real scare this Halloween isn’t the candy — it’s the misinformation. Sports drinks marketed to toddlers, energy drinks in backpacks, “electrolyte water” with almost no electrolytes… and everyone blaming sugar for the chaos when the science says sugar doesn’t make kids hyper (we did a whole episode on that one 🎧 — link in bio). Follow along for science, not scares. Education only — please check with your own healthcare provider. #KidsHydration #Halloween #SugarMyth #PediatricGI #TheGutPerformanceMD by @thegutperformancemd
The Salt Lineup, Part 1 🧂 KIDS’ DRINKS Sodium citrate vs. sodium chloride — which salt is in your kid’s cup? The plot twist nobody expects: almost every kids’ drink blends BOTH. Pedialyte, Kinderlyte, even Gatorade have sodium citrate hiding in the ingredients list. Drip Drop leads with it. Flip the package over — the front of the box won’t tell you. The label will. 🎧 Hear the whole story in “The Salt Secret” 👇 https://thegutperformancemd.podbean.com/e/gut-performance-md-why-sodium-citrate-beats-table-salt-for-athletes/ Education only — please check with your own healthcare provider. #TheGutPerformanceMD #SodiumCitrate #KidsHydration #YoungAthletes #HydrationTips by @thegutperformancemd
Throwback 🧂 This one goes all the way back to one of my very first SOLO episodes of The Gut Performance MD. On my way to tell them… sodium citrate beats table salt.💧 Table salt (sodium chloride) can be rough on young stomachs and it’s not the whole hydration story. Sodium citrate delivers the sodium athletes actually need — and it’s gentler going down. It’s the salt hiding in the better sports drinks, and most people have never heard of it. 🎧 Hear the whole story in “The Salt Secret” — 🔗 IN THIS CAPTION👇 Education only — please check with your own healthcare provider. #TheGutPerformanceMD #SodiumCitrate #KidsHydration #YoungAthletes #HydrationTips by @thegutperformancemd
