The way we think about collecting is changing…

Not all Hermès bags are investments or even investment-worthy — I break down the logic I’d apply today if I was starting to think about building a strategic collection.

Foundation with 🪣 1.

Growth with 🪣 2.

Conviction bets in 🪣 3.

I share market intelligence, reports and real-time market updates in the Luxe Circle community first.

The Hermès game has evolved in unprecedented ways over the last couple of years and more clients than ever are questioning whether the math still works in their favour…

Longer waits. Rising pre-spend requirements. Allocations that arrive close to what you asked for, but rarely exact constitute just some of the most common stories I hear every week.

Here, I break down what the real cost of the boutique route is and what the alternative looks like when you run the same arithmetic* plainly. *not the girl math kind

Save this if you’re currently in the process or if you’re about to start.

DM if you’d like to understand what the numbers look like for your specific brief. The Chanel allocation system no one explains plainly👇

If you’ve ever seen that bag you wanted on seemingly everyone but your SA tells you it’s sold out globally, this is for you.

At Chanel, “sold out” is usually a timing problem.

Every client on Chanel’s books carries a grade. Chanel doesn’t publish the tiers or the thresholds, and both move by market but they roughly look like:

ELITE - The entry grade. In some boutiques, the point where reserving becomes possible.
ELITE+ - Reservation access in more boutiques. Earlier calls on a new season.
POTENTIAL VIC - The spend has been noticed. The next few drops decides.
VIC - Private appointments, previews, invitations and insights that never reach most clients.
VVIC - A very small group. Services moves into private rooms, items are allocated ahead of a client even requesting them — they get shown to this tier first.

Three things decide the tier you’re in;
1. Yearly spend — let is drop and the status changes. Consistency is key.
2. The spread — ready-to-wear and particularly fine jewellery strengthen a profile.
3. Record (and the one no one seems to mention) — how you handled certain offers made by your SA, what you ask for, this is the credibility aspect of your profile.

The tier decides what you’re offered before a piece reaches the shelf — the pre-reservation, the preview by size, pictures of what’s in the back, the message ahead of a delivery landing etc.

This is why VIC and VVIC’s are already ahead of the reserve list.

By the time an in-demand piece is visible, most of the allocation has already been placed.

And finally, a detail most buyers miss;

🚀 Deliveries land weeks apart between boutiques and cities, so one market’s sell-out is another’s arrival. The allocations are already also pre-determined by country and boutique based on that location’s own client tiers.

That’s the whole game. It’s also why the pieces everyone wants rarely get placed from the shop floor. 🖤 by @thehandbagmatchmaker

And here’s the thing no one wants to admit…

The game itself has changed completely in under a decade. Which means playing by the old rules is, at best, inefficient.

The real luxury buyer in 2026 isn’t short on budget. They’re short on time and patience for a system that wasn’t designed for them to “win”.

They want the full Chanel ready-to-wear. The Hermès home collection. The piece they’ve had on their list for two years. What they don’t have is six hours to spend in a boutique only to be told that half of what they came for isn’t available.

This is the sentiment I hear echoed across my client base and community constantly — and it’s exactly why the role of a sourcer has changed.

I’m here for those conversations your SA was never going to have with you. Link in bio. taken in London, United Kingdom by @thehandbagmatchmaker
