The Rubik’s Cube was created by Hungarian arts and design professor Ernő Rubik in the 1970s. Originally called the “Magic Cube,” it was immediately a success in communist Hungary, but it took Rubik years to convince the government to allow sales to the West. The renamed Rubik’s Cube first hit western stores in 1980 and became wildly popular, selling over 100 million units in its first 2 years - it even got its own show in 1983, “Rubik, the Amazing Cube.”

It contains 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible configurations and as such guides were published and competitions held, but the craze had started to end before the mid 80s. It saw a resurgence in the 2000s and is still one of the most popular toys of the 20th century, selling more than 300 million units worldwide.

David Cronenberg’s “The Fly” premiered on August 15th, 1986! It starred Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis and was loosely based on the 1957 short story by George Langelaan and the 1958 film by Kurt Neumann. It was a financial and critical success, even picking up the Academy Award for Best Makeup for Chris Walas.

As tragic as it is horrific, The Fly is a visceral rumination on aging and disease and has considerably more character development than you’d expect. It remains Cronenberg’s highest-rated film by critics.

Fun fact: its tagline (which became a popular phrase) “be afraid, be very afraid!” was coined by the legendary Mel Brooks, who co-produced the film.

“Weird Science” was released on this day in 1985 - 40 years ago! It was written and directed by John Hughes based on the 1951 comic “Made of the Future,” and starred Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Kelly LeBrock, Bill Paxton, and a young Robert Downey Jr.

FUN FACTS:

- Hughes wrote the script in just 2 days and was unhappy during production because it interfered with a project he was more passionate about - “The Breakfast Club” - a movie Universal only allowed him to direct if he took the helm for Weird Science.

- Demi Moore and Robin Wright auditioned for the role of Lisa but it originally went to model Kelly Emberg, who left after 2 days due to creative differences, before it finally went to Kelly LeBrock.

- The theme song “Weird Science” by Danny Elfman’s new wave band Oingo Boingo was entirely written by Elfman while driving home after receiving a call from John Hughes to come up with something. It remains their most successful single.

Thank you so much to all of you who came out to support us on Monday!!

In case you didn't make it down, here's the cocktail menu you missed. We used some fun techniques to create a slushy without a slush machine, a small-bubble air/foam garnish, clarifications, oleo saccharums and more!
