Why is the stock market down today? πŸ“‰ One number triggered it: US inflation.

US inflation for September came in at 3.7% (year over year), above the 3.6% economists expected. Stocks were up before the report and turned red after it.

Why does 0.1 matter? Because inflation shapes what the Federal Reserve does next. After the report, the market-implied chance of another Fed rate hike at the October 28 meeting jumped from about 1 in 4 to about 1 in 2. Higher rates make borrowing pricier and future profits worth less today, which often hits tech stocks hardest.

But inflation wasn't the only reason. Chip stocks were already falling for days, and some big banks disappointed with their earnings.

One red day isn't a crash forecast. It's the market repricing new information.

Two stocks. Both $100. Which one is more expensive? πŸ€”

The price tag can't tell you. Look at what each company earns.

Company A earns $10 per share each year. Company B earns $2.
So for every $1 of profit, A costs you $10 and B costs you $50.
Same share price, but B has a P/E five times higher.

That's the P/E ratio: price Γ· earnings per share.
A higher P/E doesn't automatically mean overpriced. Fast-growing companies often have one, so compare companies in the same industry.

πŸ’Ύ Save this for the next time someone calls a stock "cheap".

Is a $5 stock cheap? πŸ“‰ Beginner investing mistake #1

A share is one slice of a company. A low share price doesn't mean a cheap company. It just means the company is cut into more slices.

Example:
πŸ• Company A: 1 billion shares Γ— $5 = $5 billion
πŸ• Company B: 10 million shares Γ— $500 = $5 billion

Same company size. And $500 buys you the exact same piece of either one.

So what does tell you if a stock is cheap or expensive? What the company earns for the price you pay. That's Episode 2 πŸ‘€

Why is SoFi stock falling when revenue just hit a record? πŸ“‰

SoFi (SOFI) grew revenue 43%, profit 61% and members 35% in Q2 2026, a record quarter. Yet the stock hit a one-year low on Oct 14 and is down about 40% this year.

One big reason, explained simply:
1️⃣ SoFi owns a bank, and values most of its loans at today's market price.
2️⃣ When interest rates rise, those loans are worth less, and that can squeeze profits.
3️⃣ On Oct 14, hot inflation news raised rate fears, and bank stocks fell together.

πŸ“Œ Save the rule: prices follow what investors expect next, not just last quarter.

Next test: SoFi's Q3 results on Oct 27. Our full SoFi breakdown, bull case vs bear case, is coming. Follow @thehiddenmachinelab so you don't miss it.

The bill you don't see every month might be the one costing you the most. πŸ‘€

Last time we did the 3-minute money leak test on your last 30 days. But some charges never show up in a 30-day check: yearly app plans, memberships, cloud storage, protection plans. They're charged once, then invisible for 11 months, and many renew on their own.

The fix is the 12-month leak test:
1️⃣ Search your bank app and email for "annual", "yearly" and "renew"
2️⃣ Go back 12 months, not 30 days
3️⃣ Divide each yearly charge by 12, so $119 a year is about $9.92 a month
4️⃣ Ask: "Would I buy this again today?" If not, cancel before it renews

πŸ“Œ Save this for your next money check, and send it to the person you share subscriptions with.

Which yearly charge surprised you the last time it renewed? πŸ‘‡

Why did tech stocks fall today? πŸ“‰ Prices just jumped the most since 2022.

This morning's PPI report showed the prices businesses pay rose 1.3% in September, in just one month. Experts expected about half that.

Why do stocks care?
1️⃣ Hot prices can push the Fed to raise interest rates.
2️⃣ Higher rates hurt companies that borrow big to grow, like tech and AI.

At the open (9:33 a.m. New York time), the indexes split:
πŸ”» Nasdaq (packed with tech): βˆ’1.3%
πŸ”» S&P 500: βˆ’0.5%
πŸ”Ί Dow (30 big companies): +0.4%

πŸ“Œ Save the rule: an index is a basket. When tech is a big piece, the basket follows tech.

One hot report isn't a crash. Next clue: the Fed's decision on October 28.

Why did CoreWeave stock drop 15% in one day while AI is booming? πŸ“‰ The clue was in its bonds.

On Oct 14, CoreWeave (CRWV) closed down about 15%. A hotter-than-expected inflation report and an analyst warning about AI cloud companies hit the stock. But the worry was also visible somewhere most people never look: its bonds.

In June, CoreWeave borrowed $1.25 billion by selling bonds that pay 9.625% a year, due 2032. On Oct 14, those bonds traded around 80 cents on the dollar. A new buyer pays about $0.80, still gets the same interest, and gets the full $1 back in 2032. Together, that's a bond yield near 15%.

What's scary, and what's not:
1️⃣ Not scary: a high yield isn't a default. The old bonds keep their 9.625% rate.
2️⃣ The real risk: CoreWeave had about $35 billion of debt at the end of June (and has borrowed more since), and new loans would likely cost more.

πŸ“Œ Save the rule: bond price ⬇️ = yield ⬆️ = lenders want more for the risk.

500 companies with one click? 🧺 What an ETF actually is, in under 40 seconds.

A stock is one company. An S&P 500 ETF is one fund that follows 500 companies, so one investment spreads your money across all of them.

Two things most beginners miss:
1️⃣ It's not equal slices. The S&P 500 is weighted by company size, so the biggest companies are the biggest slices.
2️⃣ Diversified isn't risk-free. If the whole market falls, the basket falls too.

πŸ“Œ Save the rule: Stock = 1 company. ETF = many companies, in one investment.

$600 in one month, or $60 a week starting now. Same money, very different December. πŸŽ„

Most budgets break in the months with costs that don't come every month: holiday gifts, car insurance, repairs, birthdays. They aren't surprises. We just don't plan for them.

The fix is a sinking fund: set a little aside every week for a cost you already know is coming.

The math is one line:
cost Γ· weeks left = what to set aside each week
Example: $600 for the holidays Γ· 10 weeks = $60 a week.

πŸ“Œ Save this before December, and send it to the person you share December with.

Which cost always catches you off guard? πŸ‘‡

Who really gets your money when you buy a stock? πŸ€”

When you tap BUY, your $50 almost never goes to the company. The company was paid once, at its IPO. Today you're buying from another investor.

That's the stock market: investors trading with each other.
