I didn’t know September was #suicideawarenessmonth until recently, and today I hit five months sober. Today is also five months since I’ve seen my daughter.

Five months ago I almost killed myself. I was extremely depressed, my marriage was falling apart, I was losing my family, I thought I was a failure as a stay-at-home dad, I had lost my biological father, and I was drinking….a lot It wasn’t one thing. It was a lot happening at the same time and I didn’t know what to do with any of it.

I ended up in a psych ward, went through two treatment centers, started taking medication, went to AA, Recovery Dharma, Buddhist meetings and therapy. I started journaling and meditating, and I had to actually look at myself, the things I’ve done, the people I’ve hurt, and the things that happened to me.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that I can have a thought without it controlling me. I can be angry, lonely, miss my daughter, think about my marriage, or have a really bad day, and none of those things have to control what I do next.

Dire Needs was the first book I made to process my grief. Amani, Kehinde and Nia were different parts of what I was carrying: my relationship with my mother, my father, drugs, grief, memory and healing. I didn’t sit down and say, “I’m going to write a book about grief.” I was grieving and didn’t completely know it yet. I just wrote through it.

Being sober didn’t suddenly make my life okay. I still haven’t seen my daughter in five months. I still don’t know what is going to happen with my marriage. I still get lonely, angry, hurt and afraid. I still have things I have to make amends for.

But I’m also in Hawaii. I’m working, writing, back to cooking, taking pictures, working out, going to meetings, practicing Buddhism, and staying sober. All of those things are true at the same time.

Five months ago I didn’t think I was going to be here. Today I’m five months sober. I still miss my daughter more than I can explain, and I still don’t know what happens next, but I’m here.

Check on your people. Sometimes you really don’t know what somebody is carrying until you sit down and talk to them.

Updating your website is always a challenge, but it’s live now and ready.

You can book a photoshoot, request an infused dinner @thehiddencreation or schedule a clarity call if you’re stuck creatively with cooking or photography, or just want to talk things through for an hour. taken in Miami Beach, Florida by @thehiddenvisuals

Sometimes it’s not about the feel of being there. Sometimes your client just wants to know what they’re eating.

A clean background. Clear lighting. No distractions. Just the food, exactly how it’s going to look when it hits the table.

IG will push mood, vibes, atmosphere… and that has its place.
But most of the time, your client is deciding based on clarity.
“What am I getting?” — that’s the question you need to answer.

This was shot on my Sony A7 II camera with one light source.
Simple setup. Intentional result.

If you want your food shown clearly, cleanly, and in a way that actually helps people decide

Blacker the Berry — a series where I sit down with chefs, they make a meal, and we talk about their experience. It’s one of the greatest joys I have as a chef: seeing people with people who not only love food, but understand that it can be mixed, layered, and blended in so many ways to create something truly unique.

If you’re in that space and want your food to be seen the way it should be, shoot me a DM and let’s get started on showing your food in the best light. taken in Miami Beach, Florida by @thehiddenvisuals

Mistake: adding banana leaves too early. The mixture tightens first, then wrap. Perfect infusion every time. Get the order right. #CannabisCooking #InfusedOils #CulinaryTips #FoodScience #HomeCooking #Flavor #Education #TheHiddenCreation taken in Miami Beach, Florida by @thehiddenvisuals
