Welcome to The Holbrook ✨

A 1920s home we’re slowly restoring and living in, one room and one season at a time.

Just a few months before our wedding, we unexpectedly found ourselves buying the house I had loved since childhood, just around the corner from where I grew up.

Now we’re raising our boys here, preserving what we can, and gently making it our own.

If you love old homes, thoughtful details, and the life unfolding inside them, you’re in the right place 🤍

The home office has quietly become one of the most peaceful rooms in The Holbrook. In the mornings, the sunlight spills through the original leaded glass windows in a way that no other room can quite rival.

When we first moved in, the room was painted canary yellow — bright and sunny, perhaps fitting for what would have been the original “breakfast room,” but a little loud for a workspace. Today, it’s almost unrecognizable with a calm blue wallpaper and trim.

The office became the third room we wallpapered in 2023 (right before our first was due), with @sandbergwallpaper “Linnea” in Misty Blue, paired with Smoke by @benjaminmoore on the trim.

At the heart of the room is our desk, a one-of-a-kind find from @aberfoylemrkt. This English partner’s desk, dating to the late 1800s/early 1900s, was designed so two people could sit across from each other. From its rope-carved (gadroon) edge to the claw-and-ball feet, its craftsmanship is bountiful.

It’s not lost on me that we’re living in the “good old days” right now.
So many moments, a wedding, pregnancies, tiny babies and their firsts, have already slipped quietly into memory.
This old house has held many of them, room by room, season by season.

Happy Halloween! 🦇👻

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Halloween filled with lots of treats and very few tricks!

And if you’re looking for a few extra treats, these chocolate cookies with white chocolate ghosts are almost too cute to eat!

Use your favourite chocolate cookie dough recipe and melt some white chocolate. Once your cookies have cooled, add a dollop of melted white chocolate to each cookie and gently drag it across with the back of your spoon to create your ghost. Use a toothpick to pull out the sides for little ghostly arms, then add eyes and a mouth using melted chocolate chips and a toothpick.

A sweet little Halloween treat! 👻🤍

Brides of the Holbrook 🤍

In honour of our anniversary next month, a little look back at some of the brides who have celebrated here over the years.

Since celebrating our own wedding here in 2022, one of my favourite things has been learning about the lives and celebrations this house has been part of, both before and after ours.

From my husband’s cousin, who chose the Holbrook for her wedding photos, to a bride who actually grew up within these walls while her family owned the home decades ago… and, of course, me. We were married just a few months after the Holbrook became ours.

There’s something so special about knowing this old house has been part of so many beginnings.

A very heartfelt thank you to the other Holbrook brides for allowing me to share these beautiful pieces of their stories. 🤍

September 1st. I think that means we can officially begin 🍂

Pull out the blankets, make something warm, and put on the movies that somehow just feel like autumn.

Bringing back my favourite autumn watchlist for another year.

What would you add?

Paw Patrol, with a little old-house flair 🐾🤍

A very colourful birthday takeover for our newly minted three-year-old.

Exactly the kind of birthday magic this room was made for.

Summer isn’t over just yet ✨

There’s still time to make the most of all the beautiful produce this season has to offer, so I’m holding onto these late-summer flavours just a little longer before my favourite season comes along.

A simple late-summer dinner menu:

🌿 Pesto pasta
🍋 Roasted rainbow trout with dill & lemon
🍑 Peach, tomato, burrata & basil salad
🫐 Blueberry crisp with vanilla ice cream
🍾 Grapefruit gin spritz

Fresh, colourful, uncomplicated, and exactly the kind of dinner I want to eat outside on a warm August evening.

Save this one for one last summer dinner🤍
