A conscious consumer advocating for ethical shopping, slow living, sustainable style, & small businesses

POSTS STORIES REELS

Hi hi! Some of you have been following me for years and some of you are new here! Either way I’m grateful you’re here!

But I figured it’s time for a reintroduction!

I’m Emily, the founder of The Honest Consumer! I’ve been writing about mindful living and better buying for over nine years now.

To me this means doing my research to know where products come from, shopping small businesses as often as possible, heading to the farmers market, slowing down, using what I already have, and trying to live as sustainably as possible.

The idea of conscious consumerism can be overwhelming. When I first entered the space back in 2016, I felt like I was doing everything wrong. And that’s okay!

Wherever you are in your conscious consumerism journey please know you’re welcome here! We’re all always learning. Being a mindful consumer is an ongoing journey.

I’m so excited that more people are getting excited about conscious consumerism and the boycotts are making people think twice before buying.

I hope you’ll consider signing up for my weekly newsletter for ethical shopping and sustainable living resources.

If you’re interested comment “MORE INFO” and I’ll send you a link to subscribe and/or view our most recent posts!

Happy #SmallBusinessSaturday 💓Everyday is a great day to support small businesses...not just Saturdays! As a small business owner myself I know just how big of a difference your purchases make. When you buy from a small business it's true...a real person does a happy dance and you're supporting a dream! What are some of your all businesses to support? Tag them below!!

Over at my small business @giveadamngoods you can use the code THANKFUL for 15% off apparel!

Paying livable wages, using sustainable materials, hand crafting items, producing in small batches, creating high quality items is going to have a higher price point to produce 🤷‍♀️ especially when it’s a small business making smaller quantities! And yes often times that is reflected in the end price the consumer pays, but when you buy from small businesses and ethical brands you’re putting your money toward these values of ensuring people get paid and treated fairly. If you purchase mass produced items there’s a good chance the people in the supply chains weren’t paid or treated fairly and there were some unsustainable practices going on too. To me…it’s worth the extra $ to know where my stuff comes from and that people are treated fairly. I also recognize that ethical shopping can be a privilege and isn’t always accessible to everyone.

There are plenty of other ways to take part in conscious consumerism too such as shopping secondhand, supporting local businesses in your own neighborhood, swapping with friends, and valuing what you have!

Yay for supporting ethical small businesses! by @thehonestconsumer

Welp, you will no longer be seeing The Honest Consumers posts on Facebook 😅

I’m so tired of Meta taking advantage of small creators, independent publishers, and small businesses.

The new Meta One for Business limits businesses with Facebook pages to posting two links a month…unless you pay. So small businesses owners can only share their website/product/creation two times before they have to pay to post a link.

It’s honestly so ridiculous. As an independent publisher I’m already battling AI scraping my content, limited reach due to AI answers, suppression in algorithms, and now more pay to play initiatives.

Please subscribe to my free newsletter on my website. And subscribe to other small businesses and creators direct sites because unfortunately social platforms are limiting our reach and ability to publish.

Turns out it’s kinda chic to be a conscious consumer ✨

When buying things be sure to vote with your hard earned dollars!

Shop small, shop local, invest in high quality handmade goodies, support local bookstores, grab coffee from neighborhood cafes instead of chains, and fill your tote at the farmers market ✨

My sustainable-ish look from the Hilary Duff concert ✨💖

Concerts make it tempting to buy an entirely new outfit, but I try to rewear things I own! I mean Lizzie McGuire is an outfit repeater, so you can be too!

Was my outfit 100% sustainable? Nope. 💚

My sparkly plastic accessories definitely weren’t the most eco choice, but sustainability isn’t about perfection. It’s about making thoughtful choices where we can.

I wore a cute purple cotton dress I already owned, used an old clutch I already owned, secondhand shoes, and then purchased a couple fun accessories to match the y2k Hilary Duff vibes.

Wearing what you already own, repeating outfits, borrowing from a friend, or shopping secondhand can all be great ways to enjoy the fun of dressing up without feeling like you need to start from scratch.

And the concert was AMAZING!

I’ve been a customer at @sipandship_seattle for a few years and I adore this business!

Sip and Ship is a one stop shop for shipping, coffee, and gifts in Seattle. From the fun goodies to buy, the yummy pastries, and the great customer service, it’s a gem!

Sip & Ship partners with USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL to meet everyone’s shipping needs. As a customer, I can say with confidence the Sip & Ship staff is SO knowledgeable.
I love the convenience of being able to drop off my package, grab a latte, and find the perfect greeting card or gift.

Plus, I appreciate how intentional Sip & Ship is! This small business encourages people to slow down, enjoy a cup of coffee, and stress less about shipping their goodies.

Sip & Ship founder, Diana Naramore, was kind enough to answer some questions and share the vision behind her business.

Not vibing with the AI internet 😅it’s unethical and bad for the planet. A revert button to fix the internet and go back to pre AI time would be a great wish 🙌Do you feel the same? by @thehonestconsumer
