I CANNOT believe this is a debut novel. Calling all gothic horror lovers, this one’s for you. Thank you to NetGalley & Dutton for the early access to this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Plot: Set in 1877 in Pernambuco, Brazil, this unsettling story follows a pregnant nineteen year old who must procure a proposal from her baby’s father or suffer major consequences from her family. After she manages to tell him, they are involved in a thunderstorm induced carriage crash. When she wakes up the next day at her beau’s crumbling plantation, something is very not right. He doesn’t seem the same as he did before the accident. Who was that ghostly old woman in the mirror? And why is this creepy doctor doing his level best to not let her go home? I’m not giving any more details than that because this is definitely one of those books you want to go into completely blind.

The Vibes:
I got the same feelings reading this as I did when reading The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas or Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - meaning I enjoyed the story, the twists, and the characters in their own separate ways just as much as I did in this one. The gothic aesthetic and tropes obviously differ based on setting and characters, but I would wager to guess if you vibed with those two, you’d vibe with this one too.

Standouts:
The Twist. I knew there would be a twist (obviously) but I didn’t put the whole thing together until the middle of part 2. I loved the plot of this story so much. If you like books where you’re like wtf is going on?!! in the first half, this one might be for you!

Stars: This is gonna get a 4.75 out of 5 stars from me. Why did I deduct .25? What would have made it 5 stars for me? I wanted more back story about evidence that Madalena discovered toward the end of her POV in the story. That’s the best I can do while keeping it spoiler free lol. So message me if you’ve read it and want specifics! by @thehorrormonger

Hey Summerweeners! ☀️ 🌭 did you love Backrooms? Have I got some horror book recommendations for you! Swipe for lists of my thoughts, vibes, and “if you liked…” All three of these books are best enjoyed by going in blind without knowing what you’re in for, so swipe away and let me know which one(s) you’re adding to your TBR! by @thehorrormonger

This one is for the reader who would rather choose the bear, who supports women’s wrongs, and who loves a story that includes a crooked cop getting what’s coming to him. Thanks to Random House/Delacorte Press & NetGalley for access to this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

When three high school girls named Megan unite to take down the small town’s entitled football hero, they have to decide how to handle their prank when shit gets serious. I felt like this was a cross between the two movies John Tucker Must Die and Jennifer’s Body. I typically don’t need or want any romance in my thriller/mystery/horror books, but the difference is that I’m all for it when it’s a lesbian romance plot. That even raised it up a quarter of a point for me.

Warning!! Spoilers below!!

In the end, I felt like the last third of the book wrapped up too quickly and without enough explanation. I loved the witchy vibes of the first two thirds of the book, and I was down for the revenge plot. I just wish that <spoiler>it would have committed to confirming the supernatural element(s)</spoiler> far earlier in the book. The men and boys in this story do vile things, so pay attention to the triggers warnings. <spoiler>The good news is they all get what’s coming to them. </spoiler> by @thehorrormonger

STOP scrolling & save this post for the next time you need a horror book that will completely suck you in. Social horror, gory horror, and horror lite all served up for you to choose from in this post! Which one is up your alley? by @thehorrormonger

Hey witchy readers! The Bewitching drew me in with the vibes of Isabel Cañas’ historical fiction and Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo. This book was provided to me by NetGalley & Random House/Del Rey in exchange for an honest review.

“Back then when I was a young woman, there were still witches,” Nana Alba would always say to Minerva when telling her stories of her younger years in Mexico. While Minerva works on her thesis about an obscure horror writer who attended her college decades ago, she becomes entangled in the writer’s manuscript and other unpublished documents. Before long, she starts to suspect that the dark forces haunting the writer may still be haunting their college.

A slow burn of a read, it’s all about vibes. And that’s something I love. This is a book for people who like dark academia, tales that wind through decades of history, and haunting settings. I have loved every book I’ve read by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and this one was no different. I read this around the same time I read Cackle by Rachel Harrison and they were a great witchy pairing to kick off Summerween in June. by @thehorrormonger
