- The Creative Process by James Baldwin Ridge Press, 1962 - Been revisiting some of my old writing and notes and this essay has felt very relevant. Just read it through all the way for the first time recently and I can tell that I’ll reread it many times in the near future. Wanted to share by @thehumbledocumentarian

We tend to place ourselves into the confines of a singular title, especially when pushing for perfection in our craft. I’ve noticed especially for myself that escaping these confines initiates a deeply spiritually freedom because it allows me to think within the larger frameworks that my brain naturally tries to find. A photobook may be the best medium for one project while charcoal drawings or collage might be best for another. It’s definitely been hard for me to come to terms with this as I feel that I am often pushed towards one title or the other, at least before gaining a larger platform as an artist and maker in which I can do whatever I want. Artist, curator, photographer, visionary, cultural producer, painter, sculptor…I deadass want it all. I have this insatiable desire to claim all of these titles (and more) without being confined by a singular one. There’s something I find really special about those that are able to push aside the noise and make work that is a response to the rhythms they feel throughout the world around them. After all artists aren’t saying anything extraordinary for the most part. We simply find a way to translate our perspective for the world to see. by @thehumbledocumentarian
Thinking a lot about generations and the way that knowledge is passed down between them. The role that grandparents and elders play in instilling generational knowledge is so pivotal and I never realized because I never knew mine. But the ability to teach the next generation using the knowledge of dozens prior is fascinating. There is so much strength in knowing your history from the first hand experience of the source, not just the narratives of the institution. This reading I did about Culture, Time and Science by Michel Serres and Bruno Latour (1995) has really shaped the way I see time affecting this as well. Time is not linear, but multitemporal with moments in the “linear past” continuously interacting with moments that come in the “linear present and future.” It makes so much sense to me visually and conceptually but I struggle to put that understanding in words. Especially because I see so much cyclicality in movements of black cultural production throughout history❤️‍🔥 by @thehumbledocumentarian
