a few selects from Liv’s paparazzi day 🎥 proof that a “simple” photo (as in - white wall with no special lights, backdrop, props, etc) can be a powerful one when you’re bringing the vibes and style ⚡️ by @theidentitydept

You've typed "only 3 spots left!!!" into a proposal, read it back, and felt like you should be standing on a car yard in a short-sleeve shirt and tie.

So you deleted it. Sent the proposal with no mention of your availability at all. They took three weeks to reply, and by then your calendar had filled up and they couldn't start until later. Maybe you swallow it and take on an insane workload. Maybe they wait for you, maybe they don't. Whatever happens, nobody's happy.

Being nearly booked out isn't a sales tactic. It's a scheduling fact. Your clients need it to plan, the same way they need your price and your start date.

The ick doesn't come from the information. It comes from the delivery. The extra exclamation marks. The deadline that isn't real. The "miss out forever" energy.

So here's your permission slip to communicate your capacity directly, give a reason if you want to, and let them decide like the grown adults they are.

Save this for the next proposal you send.

Hey! So just because online business gurus say you have to do certain things to make sales doesn't mean you actually have to.

If it feels gross to you to pressure people into buying your thing, you can simply choose not to operate like that. You are allowed! Promise!

People teach these tactics because they often do work. I once joined a coaching program because the price tripled if I wanted to join after the call had ended. I knew what was happening but it still got me, and I felt gross. And that niggling feeling that I had been manipulated never went away. I was less invested in the program, because I was constantly watching out for the next time they might trick me. And once it ended, I unsubscribed and unfollowed them – basically I never want to interact with them or buy from them again. EVEN THOUGH THE PROGRAM ITSELF WAS DECENT.

In week 2 of The Founding Protocol, the group had some big, deep revelations about how we can (and should) make decisions around the way we market ourselves, sell, things, even our pricing terms and financial boundaries based on what we deeply care about.

Have you ever fallen for pushy sales tactics? No shame if you have!

No is a full sentence but you’re also allowed to add a second one.

When I tell a client "I don't have the spoons for another Zoom today" or "I need a meeting-free day tomorrow", they don't think less of me, they see that I have boundaries that protect my quality of life AND the quality of my work.

So yes, even though you don’t have to explain, giving a reason for a boundary shows people what you value, which helps them know what kind of person you are and grow to trust you.

Send this to someone who over-explains their apologies and under-explains their boundaries xoxox by @theidentitydept

You can't pressure someone into working with you and then expect them to be openly tell you their deep, vulnerable truths. Which is actually what you need when you work in branding. Or coaching. Or lots of other industries tbh.

A great service is only possible when clients feel like they can share the messiness and confusion, the things they truly want and the difficult things holding them back. Nobody does that with someone who rushed them into paying.

If your sales process needs a countdown to close, the person who signs isn't ready. And someone who isn't ready won't get a good result, however good you are at what you do. by @theidentitydept

Hey so you’re actually allowed to have limited capacity as a human being g and communicate that without it being bro-marketing style manipulation.

"Only 5 spots left!!" and "I have 5 spots available next month" can be the exact same number, but one way of saying it is applying pressure and one providing information so people can make an informed decision with their money.

This is a slice of some advice I gave in last week’s Founding Protocol coaching call.

Send this to someone who hates selling but still needs to fill their spots xoxox

Slightly warm? Minor inconvenience? Complete an objectively easy task? It’s down to the 7-11 for a crisp cold fridge cigarette to replenish the dopamine in my brain. (ADHD entrepreneurs get it.)
