Wow! Yesterday was heart warming and rewarding. Special thank to every volunteer and partner that implemented a simple but powerful collective act: a community clean up from Esplanade to Poland Ave all St Claude and into the neighborhoods! We pruned trees, weeded, picked up trash, and cleaned catch basins. What else could we do as a community to make our neighborhood and our lives just a little better? The sky is the limit. The Press That Water Couldn't Drown Nearly twenty years in, The Inkwell Press is one of those hidden gems that quietly holds a whole city together... one shirt, one stitch, one design at a time. There is a stretch of St. Ferdinand Street where, if you were not looking for it, you would drive right past. No neon. No fanfare. Just a warehouse humming with the low, steady rhythm of something being made. Inside that building, ink is pulled across screens by hand, thread is guided into fabric, and designs that started as a napkin sketch or a founder's late-night idea become something you can hold, wear, and wave in the air at a second line. This is The Inkwell Press. And Gabriel Flores has been building it for nearly twenty years. The story does not start clean. It starts in a backhouse garage in Gentilly, with a man who had spent years learning the screenprinting trade and finally decided to bet on himself. He bought an old four-color manual press from the shop where he worked, quit his job, and started renovating a space for the dream. Then Katrina came. The press sat under twelve feet of water for days. The property was ruined. But the press survived. And so did the dream. In 2007, Gabriel opened The Inkwell Press officially, in a back house barely bigger than a bedroom. Nearly two decades later, that fifteen-by-fifteen beginning has grown into a full production operation (screenprinting, embroidery, and design) spilling across a warehouse floor. He prints for the giants... Nike, Vans, Coca-Cola, the Ace Hotel, the Ogden. And he prints, with the very same care, for the musician down the block, the nonprofit throwing its first fundraiser, the small business owner ordering their first run of shirts. That is the part that stays with me. Because there are businesses that grow big and forget where they stood. And then there are businesses like this one, minority-owned and artist-run, that grow big and reach back. Gabriel gives to local causes. He supports local artists and designers.
