In the driest US state, among the longest-lived trees on Earth, Long Now Research Fellow Anne Heggli and her team have collected over 120 million data points. This high-resolution data from Long Now's Nevada Bristlecone Preserve is unlocking the secrets of Earth's oldest beings.

Tuesday's Long Now Talk "Art and Science at the Bristlecone Preserve" brought together @DRIscience's Anne Heggli, artist and philosopher Jonathon Keats, and paleoclimatologist Adam Csank to illustrate how "long science" is the key to understanding ecosystem resilience and deep time.

Such a wonderful night with rich conversations. Thank you to all who attended.

Issue 3 of Pace Layers, our annual print journal, is now available for preorder! New subscribers get Issue 2 free while supplies last.

This year's issue asks: What does long-term thinking look like in practice?

One answer is maintenance — what Long Now cofounder Stewart Brand calls "the whole grand process of keeping a thing going."

@theinterval at The Long Now Foundation has a way of attracting some of the most interesting people I know. Scientists, artists, writers, builders, explorers, people thinking seriously about time and what comes next.

It’s become one of my absolute favorite places to hang out, have long conversations, and make portraits.

I’m honored to be their artist-in-residence, and grateful for all the remarkable people who keep passing through this strange and wonderful place.

A group of artists in the 01960s rejected the museum, and went out into the American West to build monumental-scale artworks in the desert. That group of rebels deeply affected what would come next, inside and outside of the gallery.

If you're interested in countercultural figures, strange histories, and monumental art projects like this — welcome to the Long Now. We have members around the world, and if you're new here, come get connected to this whole world of long-term thinking.

Welcome to second summer in San Francisco! It's going to be warm and clear all week, so come in for a glass of sunshine — aka our Oaxacan old fashioned.

In 02007, bartender Phil Ward swapped the whiskey in an Old Fashioned for reposado tequila and mezcal, and a new classic was born. Our take adds chile liqueur and chocolate bitters.

Salud.

Some of the longest-lived institutions have a surprising thing in common: they serve drinks. Weihenstephan has been brewing beer in Bavaria since 01040. Sudo Honke has been making sake in Japan since 01141. This is, in large part, why we made Long Now headquarters into a bar.

Look overhead at The Interval and instead of a chandelier, you'll see our twinkling Bottle Keep. It follows the Japanese tradition of keeping a personal bottle at the bar for your next visit. Custom-made by Adams & Chittenden Scientific Glass, these globes hold @stgeorgespirits single malt whiskey and gin distilled with juniper berries foraged on our Nevada Bristlecone Preserve.

A huge thanks to our Bottle Keep members and donors: you all made The Interval renovation possible back in 02014. (There's still room on the ceiling to add your bottle, if you wish. Find the link in bio)

We love that leaving a bottle behind is like a small bet, a wager that you’ll return soon. by @theinterval

Laurie Anderson is a counterculture icon, and the artist behind this viral sound. She’s a musician, painter, author — and was just selected to contribute to the @futurelibraryno.

Future Library is a long-term art project by @studio.katie.paterson. It’s a library that won’t open until 02114. All the manuscripts will remain a secret for another 88 years.

More coverage of Future Library is coming in the next issue of Pace Layers, our annual print journal. Stay tuned.

This Manhattan variation was created in tribute to the thriving contemporary Trinidadian population on Staten Island's North Shore and that borough's deeply rooted Italian heritage. A melting pot in a glass.

For this cocktail, Scarlet Ibis Trinidadian rum shines with the balanced Cocchi di Torino. The dry curaçao provides notes of bitter orange, spices, and a bit of sugar cane.

Ingredients:
Pierre Ferrand Curacao
Cocchi Vermouth di Torino
